Models of Social Care for Older Adults in an Integrated Care System (MOSAICS)

(Principal Investigator: Professor David Challis)

The study took place between February 2018 and April 2019 and was funded by NIHR SSCR. It explored emergent approaches to integrated care for older people and its components in Greater Manchester and employed a case study approach.

There were five areas of enquiry:

  • Systematic description of service characteristics

  • Interviews with managers

  • Interviews with practitioners

  • Estimates by practitioners of the feasibility of supporting older people at home within their service

  • Evaluation of workforce and training requirements arising from the new services

Social care services before the influence of modernisation: a review of the state of service delivery, commissioning and service impact

(Principal Investigator: Professor David Challis)

This study involved a systematic analysis of the nature of social care services prior to the implementation of the modernisation agenda in the late 1990s. The study, funded by the Department of Health PRP (2003 to 2005), involved a quasi-systematic literature review and national surveys about services for all four user groups: people with a learning disability; adults with a mental health problem; older people; and people with a physical disability

Promoting Continuity of Care for Older People across Health and Social Care

[Principal Investigator: Dr Andrew Bebbington]

Continuity of care is defined as a key aspect of quality. This study was undertaken between 2001 and 2003 to review evidence on continuity of care for older people between health and social care organisations. It examined five areas: Discharge planning and NHS settings; Care Coordination and care management; Care Programmes in Care Homes; and Intermediate Care and Rehabilitation; Patient centredness and User and Commissioner perspectives. Methods included review of literature, focus groups and a survey of initiatives designed to promote continuity of care. The study was funded by the NIHR SDO funding stream.
