The Design and Use of Local Metrics to Evaluate Performance: A Comparative Analysis of Social Care Organisations

(Principal Investigator: Professor David Challis)

This study was funded by the ESRC (2006 to 2010) to examine local approaches to performance measurement in social care. It examined the use of performance measures and monitoring techniques in local social care services for older people, to identify future strategies for the performance regime in social care. First, it explored the use of measures and how organisations are rated on their performance, through a questionnaire survey across England and Northern Ireland. Secondly, it explored, through management interviews and reviews of written material in the UK, and comparison with performance measures in Japan, their use at a more local level.
