Lesson begins with link to background on the history of water quality at Lake Merritt. Students explore a dataset including amounts of trash recovered, rainfall, and numbers of volunteers removing trash, as well as total annual trash recover by the Lake Merritt Institute from 2005-2019. Using hand graphing or Excel students examine relationships among the variables and hypothesize

Boulder treasure hunt in Lakeside Park. CAUTION: FOLLOW ALL SHELTER-IN-PLACE RULES
The geology of the San Francisco Bay area is involved and interesting. Geologist Andrew Alden points out that there were originally no boulders around Lake Merritt. People brought them in from all over. He has been able to identify their likely sources, giving us a fun way to get introduced to the geology around us.

Before you head out, visit Andrew Alden's blog, Oakland Geology at https://oaklandgeology.com. Go to the "Rocks of Lakeside Park" and either print it out or make sure you can see it on your device. Your mission is to find every boulder and take a selfie with it. I would start at the blueschist boulder in front of the Rotary Nature Center.
