Oakland High School Students and their teacher, Katie Noonan, helped Dr. Richard Bailey at the Lake Merritt Institute identify a new snail that appeared in the lake in 2005 -- with the help of DNA science! The OUSD school group contacted Dr. Ryan Kelly (an Oakland native) then at the American Museum of Natural History who extracted and analysed the DNA sequences from the snails collected by the children. Their work contributed to a public presentation.
