EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS & ACTIVITIES

CONTACT US to discuss how we can work with you to help achieve your science education and stewardship goals at Lake Merritt

EXPLORING INVERTEBRATE BIODIVERSITY -Activities for students and groups from K-12 through college and the public.

MONITORING WATER QUALITY - All levels can participate in a 25-year-old water monitoring project available at S.F.E.I.'s CEDEN website.

PLANKTON - Students K-14 and the public can collect and classify plankton and relate to lake ecology and harmful algal blooms. We have visited Microscopy classes and Biology classes at Merritt College and Laney College to provide hands-on labs and discussion.

MARSH RESTORATION, MONITORING AND ADAPTATIONS OF NATIVE PLANTS - Activities for all ages: observing marsh structure, monitoring plants, removing invasive plants, planting natives, and watching birds. We are developing a nature-journaling approach to monitoring this spot for visitors of all ages.

UNDERWATER ROBOTIC VEHICLE EXPLORATION - Rotary Nature Center Friends in collaboration with the Lake Merritt Underwater Observatory allows the public and students to see the underwater world at Lake Merritt. Participants can drive the Trident ROV to explore different parts of the lake. The Underwater Observatory has "expeditions" posted on National Geographic's Field Notes website.

G.L.O.B.E. ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS - Rotary Nature Center Friends has three G.L.O.B.E. Hydrology stations at Lake Merritt and taps into an international student environmental monitoring program Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment. Able to facilitate teachers and students with G.L.O.B.E. projects and collaborations.

SCIENTIFIC DATA COLLECTION AND POSTER-MAKING - We help students communicate their science data projects through scientific posters presented at conferences and other public venues.

VIRTUAL LESSONS for K-14 CLASSES - We have designed and provided virtual lessons for first graders about lake ecology and bird adaptations. We have worked with high school students to design lessons and helped them present to elementary classes as part of senior projects. We have helped college and high school classes participate in the International Student Carbon Footprint. We worked with ISCFC to add an Environmental Justice thread to the interactive Forum.
