FACTS: Uganda's housing situation is characterized by inadequate homes in terms of quality and quantity in both rural and urban areas. The housing deficit stands at 2.4 million housing units, out of which 210,000 units are in urban areas and 1.395 million units in rural areas.
Many young people and families on low to middle incomes struggle to afford to rent or buy a decent home. Overcrowding, evictions, rent arrears and homelessness are all on the rise.
There are many factors for housing problem, such as population growth, land supply, economy, interest rate, employment opportunity, income level, availability of finance, capacity of the construction industry, government regulations and policies, property taxes and fees, effects of wars etc.
Rural houses involve high recurring costs (maintenance) which the poor residents cannot afford.
Rural houses are incapable of providing protection against natural calamities like floods, cyclones, etc.
