The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 3.465 Billion Japanese are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The tiny, pro-business, outspoken government is dominated by the Department of Defense, although Law & Order is also considered important, while Spirituality and International Aid receive no funds. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of New Tokyo. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 6.7%.

The strong Japanese economy, worth 49.4 trillion New Japanese ¥ens a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Information Technology, and Woodchip Exports. Average income is 58,050 New Japanese ¥ens, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 337,117 per year while the poor average 4,736, a ratio of 71.2 to 1.

All major public areas are watched by police surveillance cameras, New Japanese Empire has designated New Tokyo as its capital city, Emperor Shirotiko I has just been declared ruler of New Japanese Empire in an international press conference, and prime real estate is devoted to wind farms and solar energy generators. Crime is a problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. New Japanese Empire's national animal is the Japanese Dragon, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
