AIand Music

The relationship between music and generative artificial intelligence is one of the most complex issues in contemporary culture, because music is never merely a sequence of sounds. It is memory, body, gesture, timbre, identity, archive, industry, copyright and an emotional relationship with the listener.

Today, generative A.I. can produce tracks, melodies, lyrics, arrangements, synthetic voices, sound design, remixes, soundtracks and stylistic simulations. But this does not mean that the machine becomes a musician in the human sense of the word. Rather, it means that part of the musical process is transferred to systems capable of generating sonic combinations from vast amounts of data.

Like the recorder, magnetic tape, the synthesizer, the sampler, the sequencer, MIDI, Auto-Tune and the laptop, AI also changes the relationship between gesture, composition and listening. It does not necessarily eliminate human creativity, but redefines the role of the musician: from performer or composer to system designer, archive curator, selector of results and director of the sonic process.

Composition can thus become less linear. It does not begin only with a melody, a rhythm or a chord, but also with a prompt, a database, a voice, an image, an archival recording or a soundscape. A.I. can generate material, but musical meaning still arises from a human decision: why that sound, that duration, that memory, that montage, that relationship with the listener?

An A.I. model does not merely reuse sonic fragments; it can absorb styles, structures, musical gestures and sonic identities. For this reason, generative music opens up enormous possibilities, but also urgent questions about consent, copyright, traceability, responsibility and the control of platforms.

The main risk is functional and anonymous music: formally correct, quickly producible, always adaptable, but lacking any real artistic necessity. If A.I. is used only to generate generic low-cost music, it impoverishes the sonic and cultural ecosystem. If, on the other hand, it is used to interrogate archives, transform materials, create new listening processes and challenge the relationship between human and machine, it can become artistically meaningful.

The value of a musical work does not lie in whether it was made with or without A.I. , but in the quality of the project, the depth of the process, the responsibility toward its sources and its ability to tell a story. Technology can produce sounds, but it cannot guarantee a vision.

In this sense, generative artificial intelligence should not be celebrated as a machine capable of doing everything, nor rejected as an absolute threat. It should be questioned, guided, limited and transformed: not as a substitute for musical imagination, but as a critical mirror through which to understand how our ways of creating, listening and giving meaning to sound are changing.
