Olympic Park

PEACEFUL DESIGN

MAY 30, 2023

Munich's Olympic Park is a beautiful and thought-provoking example of a space that served a specific purpose, but was built to last for years to come.

I enjoyed the beauty of the park, but found those intentions behind its creation the most interesting. In the literal way of acknowledging but moving past their history, the park is physically built on top of the rubble from WWII bombings that devastated many German cities. In how historically, its function needed to be greater than a one-time event venue and align with Germany's motivations for hosting the games, to represent a new, peaceful, and optimistic image of the nation. And lastly, how with this goal in mind, the park is playfully designed and made to be a gathering place that could remain in that community long-term. These choices show intentionality in design and a consideration for long-lasting, sustainable structures and spaces.
