July Reflection
We have been asked to provide an update on this course of research. This reflection comes at an interesting time. This is probably always the case. I have continued exploring collage and in particular fixing and connecting materials together.
The versatility of paper is a fundamental part of my research and opens up many possibilities. I am exploring the material strengths of paper to transform into a soft, flexible form using momigami techniques and book-making methods to form rigid 3 D structures. Map and mark-making remain the main communicative and narrative framework in the practice.
I am now working on an assembly of work that maps three discrete local areas.
My next step is to make a portfolio of photographs and 1-minute videos to make film poems. These will be in the three locations I have chosen.
During my practice, I have become interested in knots and stitches. I want to make more considered choices for fixing the collage and those specific joining structures are something I am keen to explore.
I am enjoying continuing to develop my use of watercolour paint and pencils. How these materials work with/on the G. F. Smith paper is a research aim.
This material engagement began with my desire to utilise, reuse, recycle, and repurpose what I had available already. From a broader perspective, the workshop with Les Bicknell on 'bookness' and my fellow rewilders work prompts and feeds into my research questions.
