July Reflection
Referencing the potential role of wetlands in water filtration within the paper industry, I am making work based on an area of local wetland that filters polluted mine run-off from a disused coal mine. (photograph of wetland site]
Investigating source materials through making paper using recycled wood and paper pulp, reused cotton fibres and plant based size. Reeds from the polluted wetland area are embedded in the surface
Recognising that wood lignin is a primary source of paper fibre, and the importance of ensuring the paper industry fosters biodiverse, sustainably managed woodland habitats. I am studying an area of local protected woodland, documenting its regeneration following a wildfire. [watercolour, work on paper]
Kaolin (a form of clay) is used as a filler in recycled paper production and as a surface treatment for paper to achieve diverse surface qualities. Kaolin is also a central material in ceramics, being used within glaze composition, slip and clay bodies. I am developing, testing, and refining new surfaces (slips, stains and glazes) that have kaolin as a base ingredient. [glaze and slip tests]
