Infantalizing Capitalism, 2024
Infantilizing Capitalism is a critique of how the idea of the American Dream, and even becoming financially stable, has become practically out of reach in the present day. We live in a day where we worry and fear for our housing situation, our student debts, hospital bills, food security; the list goes on and on.
It's hard to feel as though our life is really in our hands when one unexpected event can leave some of us in financial ruin. I equate this situation to that of a child in their room: they're given toys that work their brain or point them to a certain career, they have stuff that sits too high on a shelf or hangs above their head; impossible for them to reach. Everything in this space teaches them what to do and what to value.
This is a sentiment made manifest. Feel free to walk the space, to envision yourself or someone else inhabiting this space, and to question what this space means in your life and others' lives.
About the Artist
My work is an extension of myself and my voice. Throughout my life, it has been difficult for me to express my thoughts and interests out of fear of miscommunication or rejection. Art allows me to work on this part of myself and to develop my artistic voice.
Though I incorporate different materials and mediums into my practice, I find myself most comfortable within the realms of digital art and graphic design; incorporating softer palettes and cutesy dream-like iconography that some would consider an escape from reality. Most recently, I have been expanding my practice into the realm of 3D works, inspired by artists like Alexander Calder and Ann Hamilton.
Ultimately, I hope to further grow into my role as an artist – developing new ways to express myself to the world whilst battling anxiousness and self-doubt – to inspire others who have that same desire to be seen.
