Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Fine Arts Night
The above video that is attached is from our "Fine Arts Night" from class AEDU 202. Due to the pandemic and covid restrictions we had to make our video from our homes. The video consists of two teachers instructing a lesson on a contemporary dance that can be taught to students rather they be in the classroom or through remote learning. This lesson has helped me better understand and prepared me for the lesson planning and instruction if students elect to learn from a remote setting.
The artifacts listed above have helped me in understanding how to accommodate my teaching philosophy and style to Illinois State Standard 2: "The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice." By having me play the role of the student I understand what would be best taught in order for my students to have a meaningful experience with the interactions they have within my classroom.
After watching the video of our group I see where specific instruction is needed when teaching students and how specific an educator needs to be. The challenges that we have faced as educators through online courses can be trying and I believe this video is a great example of how as an educator you must try to keep all students engaged while there might be distractions.
EdTPA Literacy "Fine Arts Night"
In meeting the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 2: Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge, the artifact we created was a lesson plan for the "Fine Arts Night" assignment. The purpose of this assignment was to gain a deeper knowledge of Literacy in physical education, understanding how physical education has an impact on critical thinking levels, and finding correlations between literacy and physical education. I chose this artifact for standard 2 because I felt that it was a good example of learning the content area and pedagogical knowledge of physical education, along with tying literacy into the content area.
Throughout creating this artifact it was important to keep close to the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard, "Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge". I was able to achieve this through section 2B, which states, "the competent teacher understands major concepts, assumptions, debates, and principles; processes of inquiry; and theories that are central to the disciplines;" This lesson plan was different on how to go about planning because of the full remote learning that was being taught.
After completing this artifact, I found that Litearcy in the Disciplines can be extended to all disciplines, including Physical Education. Completing this artifact enabled me to see the importance of literacy in physical education in my future career is completely necessary and appropriate. I have learned that connecting different content areas to your can help to expand your pedagogical knowledge of your own content area.
