Anuraj is a printmaker based on Bediagal Land (between Parramatta and Hawkesbury rivers) and he designs woodprints. His wood prints explore the Dharmic Heritage of South Asia.
With his work, Anuraj hopes to give new insight into some old ideas, as well as allow a deracinated generation a glimpse into the thoughts and moorings of their ancestors.
Through his art, Anuraj seeks to share his own journey towards learning, understanding and embracing an identity he was born into.
About Anuraj’s work
Calligraphy on wood
This current body of work is a celebration of language, scripts and some of the lesser appreciated philosophical heritage of the Indic Civilisation. The copious libraries of philosophical depth and rigour are often discarded today in favour of faith and devotion (bhakti), to the extent that many aren't aware that these even exist. The only way to regain that agency is through reclamation of language, as it is the strongest carrier of culture. By creating a calligraphic symbol for key concepts my work hopes to give new insight into some old ideas. My art is an exploration of identity, as a way to reconnect to the past.

The artworks are symbolic calligraphy in the Devanagri Script. Each one represents a concept from Indic philosophies and metaphysics. They are presented as woodprints on paper, initially carved into a block of wood, painted over and pressed carefully onto paper to give a unique finish.
