Unit 1, Activity 1: Background Knowledge
1. To get started on the course and your Final Project, review some of the information drafted and discussed at the June Face-to-Face Training:
- Which one of the 10 hacks from Hacking School Libraries: 10 Ways to Incorporate Library Media Centers into Your Learning Community by Kristina A. Holzweiss and Stony Evans interests you? Is it the same or different than the one you selected in June? Edit the hack in column E to reflect your current choice.
- Are the three goals you drafted in June ones that you are currently pursuing? Which one of the goals integrates with the hack you selected above? Can you develop an activity, project, or program to implement the hack and accomplish the goal? Edit your goal document linked in column G to reflect your current choices. (If possible, the one hack/goal you select for your Final Project for this course can serve as your professional development and/or other school/district requirement for the 2019-2020 school year. Your Final Project should be relevant to you, your students, your staff and your school.)
2. Browse the AASL, ISTE, Future Ready Crosswalk documents and note the frequency of the words leadership and collaboration in each. Leading and collaborating are essential practices for both students and school librarians.
3. Read the AASL Sample Job Description for School Librarians. Although the document was created before the current standards were developed (2010), it includes language describing the best practices in leadership and collaboration.
Optional:
AASL has many tools on their standards page that further support leadership and collaboration under Resources - Materials, for example:
- School Libraries Transform Learning Message Box
- School Library Evaluation Checklist
Re-write the AASL Sample Job Description for School Librarians to fit your school/district.
