There have been significant breakthroughs and studies of both time travel and multiverse theory over the years. This has brought along with it some controversial opinions on terminology and sub-specialties within the multiverse field itself.
As one of the more controversial take, there have been several prominent voices that have remained outspoken for this point of view including Marilyn Bunroe. The argument follows as thus: any appearance of time travel does not involve looping back onto one's own timeline, but instead creates many splinter universes. They argue that study of such phenomena should fall under multiverse theory and that the specialty of time travel should not exist at all.
While not many agree with this definitive statement, there is some evidence that this could be the case for some making some artifacts difficult to qualify.
However, others argue that there is strong evidence that indicates that a timeline can be looped upon itself.
Archive submission “Repetition” from Earth-UTUT173-021, details a journal that could retain the effects of previous time lines. The previous effects seem to ripple and continue to affect the current timeline. While it might be argued that a splinterverse could be causing this, additional study did not support any evidence that the original “verse” still existed. This suggests that the original was overridden by the new timeline. A clear argument in favor that “time travel” can and should be studied separately from multiverse theory.
Sadly, there has not been a conclusive finding yet whether time-travel exists entirely within a multiverse framework or whether it is truly possible to travel back onto one's own timeline. The inherent dangers of studying time, more so than even that of studying the multiverse itself, make critical research difficult to accomplish. Our findings generally work off of second hand sources some of which seemly contradict each other.
Ultimately, it will require more time and funding to reach a firm theory that incorporates all of the evidence we've acquired thus far.
