One of the students that I was starting to work more one on one with when going over his vocab is a beginning English learner and he still does not know a lot of vocab words as well. I had seen from his past vocab tests that he was still struggling a lot with the vocab and not really understanding what he was supposed to be spelling. I then had a flashback to when I was with my EL placement teacher and we were going through some vocab words and she knew how to spell them but did not know what any of them were. We drew pictures and it helped her to understand. I decided then that I wanted to start adding pictures to the vocab lists for him since I was already creating those and picking out which words I wanted him to practice as well. Having the pictures on the words helped him know what the word was more as well and I am glad that I noticed that that was something that he needed to help him in his learning (3C).
Something that I learned was that while it does take extra time to adapt the vocab list, it is more important to do because these are the students that you are working with and I want them to succeed so it is not that much work in the long run if it is helping them learn and succeed.
Now that I have pictures on his vocab list, I also created a Google slides presentation with each of the vocab pictures for him to use during his test (3E). It was just to study at first but then I decided to use it during his test to see if that would make a difference, which it did. I am glad that I am able to support him in this way when I was working with him one on one.
Something that I learned when creating this was that it is really easy to just copy over the same picture that I used for the vocab list. I also learned that I can put the pictures in order of the test and we can study them that way to get the student more used to it as well.
