Black History Month Project
This Black History Month project was the first big project that I did during student teaching. I had wanted to do something where my students could research someone who made an impact who was African American. I was able to use some of the books I had about influential people throughout history and the internet to decide on six people that the groups of students could research. I was new at figuring out what they were going to do for the month of February once a week during WIN (what I need). We did run out of time to create Google slides and present them to the class but I think that this timeline poster turned out better. I hung it in the hallway so that everyone could learn about it and see what we were doing in class. Each of the classes did a different twist but we were the only class to create posters and present them to each other in the hallway.
Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset Anchor Chart
This was an anchor chart that I made when we had a second step lesson. We have been talking about differnet mindsets and what are good things that we can say to help us stay successful. I had started a Google doc on the computer and I had everyone come up with ideas for both of them. I then created a poster that we could use in the future to talk about what we can switch our statements to to be more positive. I decided to draw a small flower stem in a pot for the fixed mindset side because it represnts ideas not helping people grow while the growth mindset helps people grow and blossom to succeed and keep going as well. This was hung up in the cool down corner so that everyone could look over it for the rest of the year.
Poster for Water Bottle Station
This was another one of the first things that I had done when I started my student teaching experience. The whole class had a really hard time taking their water bottles home at the end of the day and week. It got so bad over a few weeks that I poured out and recycled about fifteen to twenty bottles two seperate times. I decided to draw pictures on my white boards and it became a trend for me to have a drawing up. This one is of a shark and he says "hunt down and take home your water bottles or I will" My teacher and I had talked about how all of the water bottles were a problem and I decided to do something fun and see if it worked. It did work right away and all of the kids really appreciated my drawing too.
Decorating for St. Patrick's Day
I absolutely love decorating for each and every holiday that I can. Since I was not there for Halloween or Christmas, I decided to go all out for St. Patrick's day. It turned into a full event with the students being mystefied that the lepherachan had moved all of their chairs into the back. I was also one of the only teachers who really went all out for the holiday as well. Many teachers came by to check out how I had decorated the room after they heard about it from different teachers. Everyone had a lot of fun with it and I am glad that it turned out as good as it did.
This was the cougar paw behavior chart that I started about half way through my student teaching placement. At first, the students had to get all five cougar paws a week in order for them to get 25 minutes of free time/ time outside. However, that was quickly showing that it was not working. So, my teacher recommended that for every cougar paw that they get, they will get five minutes. So, by the end of the week they would still be able to earn all 25 mintues but if they didn't and they only had three cougar paws, they still get a reward of fifteen minutes to not have them lose interest becase it would be impossible to get the reward.
This was part of the volume control system that I created. My teacher showed me another teacher's version of volume control after I first started mentioning that I wanted to create a volume control chart of some kind. For mine, I originally had five levels with an arrow. Now, it is only four levels with light that I can switch to match the level. I had the papers smaller but my teacher wrote out the numbers and put them up on the board. She had originally had 0-5 levels but I took the other two off because it was way too much for me and my students on there. I used this a lot and was always asking students what level we were at and what does that mean. The light visual was better because even in the dark they could see the light color and know what level the classroom was at.
Last Week Spirit Week
This was the spirit week that I created for my last week of student teaching. I had a lot of fun thinking of ideas that we had not done in a while and also thinking of ideas that a lot of the students would like. They all loved it and I was getting into it every day. I dressed up as Baymax on Monday, had everyone write jokes and hang them up in the hallway on Tuesday so everyone in the school could join in and the students had a lot of fun with it, on Wednesday I got temporary purple spray in my hair, on Thursday I twinned with one of my students and we wore our matching earrings, and on Friday, I wore plaid pj pants and a red hoodie and brought in a peanut butter stuffed animal that I have.
