My Yearbook Story -
My Yearbook Story -
I've always had an eye for design and photography, but was placed in a school that focused on sports and music. After searching around for different purposes, I found yearbook. I began yearbook my 7th grade year. I was confused and the youngest person on staff, but so many of my teachers recommended me, my mother insisted I joined. I poured my heart into that class, and became a head editor for the Madison Middle School yearbook the next school year.
Covid struck my 8th grade year, causing it to be months shorter than usual. This also caused a slow start into my high school career at Rosa Scott High School. After applying for Rosa's yearbook staff, I successfully got in. I was so proud of myself, and this was the first time after Covid-19 that I felt appreciated and normal. We had a small staff, but we ended up making a great yearbook. Half of us ended up applying for Madison Central High School's yearbook staff and made it.
My Sophomore year at Madison Central was weird due to masks and insecurities. However, I always felt loved and needed in Yearbook. I didn't have a close relationship with my senior editors, but I made connections with other upperclassmen that helped me better learn design, reporting, and leadership.
Junior year was my biggest struggle to date. I got a 20+ hour a week job, a full schedule, yearbook, a video production class, and broadcast journalism. I was constantly tired and overworked, but I wanted to prove to my editors that I was strong and had the potential to be a head editor my senior year. I ended up proving them right and was titled as a "co-design editor" my senior year.
Now, I work multiple hours a week on the 400 pages in the Madison Central Yearbook. This may seem like a lot, but it's not to me because it's something I genuinely love. I am so thankful that my mother insisted I join the yearbook staff at Madison Middle School because now I have something to call my own.
7th Grade Year
8th Grade Year
Freshman Year
Sophomore Year
During this amazing year, I began to balance my yearbook work and broadcast journalism work. While being a huge part of these classes, I also had a part time job working 20+ hours a week, and was taking three AP Courses. The talented people I was surrounded by helped my year go smoothly and not overwhelming.
My senior year on the Madison Central Yearbook staff was the best year to date. I learned how to deal as a leader/head editor, and used real-world techniques. I was educated by my advisor and taught my fellow classmates how to better their design styles and learn more about.....
My Broadcast Journalism Story -
After being visited by the class of 2021 Jaguar News Network group and students from the Academy of Multimedia and Communications in the 8th grade, I fell in love with the idea of videography and working in media.
I quickly joined the Academy of Multimedia and Communications during my Freshman year of high school and began learning about editing, videography, and photography. I decided to continue through this for my sophomore and junior year, but not my senior year.
I joined broadcast journalism and became a correspondent for Jaguar News Network. Corresponding was difficult along with the hours spent editing and producing short news segments, but after being awarded as the Best News Reporter by Mississippi Scholastic Press Association, I finally saw my potential. I felt as if my hard-work was worth it and wanted to continue to pursue big things.
I ended up becoming the Head Communications Producer my senior year, and I absolutely loved it. I continued to correspond for groups when needed and tried to help where I could in every aspect. I ran all of the social medias and lead presentations to teach my underclassmen about social media and communications. Due to this class, I have been offered internships, awards, and a strong group of people to call my friends.
My Broadcast Journalism Class pictures over the years...
The picture above was taken after the Spring 2023 MSPA convention with all of the awards Jaguar News Network accumulated. This was the class I was placed in and the diversity of students in there was inspiring. Learning from my upperclassmen and producers helped me in my senior year.
This picture was taken at the fall 2023 MSPA convention. Jaguar News Network was almost 1/3 of what it was my Junior year. I was so nervous that we wouldn't have enough people to succeed. This taught me a lesson on Quantity and Quality. Yes, quantity is good, but usually the quality of your work matters more.
