Research Administration as a Profession

Profiling the Research Management and Administration (RMA) Profession Around the World

RAAAP

These projects aim to better understand the profession of research management and administration (RMA) and the individuals that form the profession.  As well as demographics we have looked at skills, the prevalence of the support for research impact, and routes into the profession.  To date, three international surveys of RMAs have been conducted (2016, 2019, 2022) with a total of over 12,000 responses over that six year period.  All these (anonymised) data are freely available for people to analyse, and of course we have undertaken some ourselves which are linked to in the "data" section.

The original NCURA funded survey from 2016 with 2,691 responses from research administators (RMAs) around the world, with a focus on skills.

The second survey (now endorsed by INORMS) from 2019 with 4,324 responses, with a focus on research impact.

RAAAP-3 (HIBARMA)

The third iteration from 2022 with 5,076 responses, focussing on "how I became a research manager and administrator".

The second tranche of NCURA funding enabled us to create a longitudinal dataset (12,091 records) from the common parts of the first three surveys, together with some infographics

We are planning a 4th iteration of the survey to run in 2025.
