Definition
If n • m = k, then n and m are called factors or divisors of k, and k is said to be a multiple of n and m.
Remember that in the product 3 • 7 = 21, numbers 3 and 7 are called factors or divisors of 21. The product, which is 21, is called a multiple of 3 and 7. Likewise, in product 5 • 2 = 10, 5 and 2 are factors of 10, while 10 is called a multiple of 5 and 2.
When a number is multiplied by itself several times, you can write the product in exponential notation to simplify or shorten the expression.
Check your Understanding
Answer each question orally.
1. How will you evaluate 95 on your calculator?
2. How will you find the value of 25?
3. How will you find the value of 11000?
4. Is 42 equal to 24 ? Explain your answer.
5. How will you write 32 in exponential form?
Practice
Evaluate the given exponential terms. Write the answers in the blanks.
