Modal is a word such as 'can' or 'would' which is used in a main verb to express ideas such as possibilities, intentions and necessities.

Modals have several functions:
A. Probability
Modals can be used when something is surely to have happened, is happening, and will happen. These are called modals of probability or certainty.
Examples:
1. It must be a good experience to see the T’boli tribe weave their T’nalak.
2. It can make one proud of our people’s creativity.
3. One could see how ingenious our local tribes are when you see their weaves.
B. Ability
They can also show ability.
Examples:
1. The Ilonggos can weave cloth out of pineapple leaves.
2. You could use this piña cloth for wedding gowns and barongs.
C. Obligation and Advice We use them when we want to emphasize something that is necessary or unnecessary, or when we give advice.
Examples:
1. You must read about how the weavers come up with their design.
2. A Filipino must have one locally woven dress, décor, or household item.
3. Pupils must be exposed to this age-old art.
D. Permission Modals are used to say what is and what is not allowed.
Examples:
1. You may buy a local weave and send it to your foreigner friends as gifts.
2. Could you make a list of all the local tribes that have their own weaves?
E. Habits They also talk about something that is usually done or was done in the past. Examples:
1. Every time I visit Davao, I would usually visit the T’boli women who weave.
2. I will always be proud of my Philippine culture and heritage.
When you see the different Philippine weaves, you see the creativity of the Filipinos. It amaze you. You even buy samples of these products. You fill your house with them. You truly by proud of your heritage.
