Feta cheese, made from pure goat’s milk, is aged in brine.
Brine is water that is saturated with salt. Since it is aged in brine, it is quite salty. It is saltier than the fresh goat cheese.
These cheeses can compete in the world market. They are so tasty that they can make one proud that they are made by a Filipina.
What did you notice with the words in bold? What were these words doing?
These words are adjectives. They describe nouns and pronouns. If you read carefully through the selection, the underlined words were comparing the specified cheese with other kinds of cheese.
When adjectives are used to compare nouns and pronouns, they are called comparison of adjectives or degree of adjectives.
There are three degrees of adjectives: positive, comparative, and superlative.
Positive is when the noun is just being described. Only the base adjective is written.
Example: Fresh goat cheese is salty.
Comparative is when a noun or a pronoun is being compared with another one. The suffix -er is added to the adjective.
Example: Feta cheese is saltier than fresh goat cheese.
Superlative is when a noun or a pronoun is being compared with a lot of other nouns and pronouns. The suffix -est is added to the adjective.
Example: Some people say that the blue cheese is the saltiest cheese in the world.
