How well does your family take care of your resources at home? Does your mother prepare a schedule of activities for the whole family? Does every member follow what is on the schedule? What happens when a home is well-managed or poorly managed?
Types of Family Resources
Family Resources
are those which the family possesses and makes use of in order to achieve family goals
Family resources are classified into two types:
A. Human Resources - refer to family members and what each one possesses.
Abilities and Skills - both native and acquired
The ability to solve mathematical problems and the skill, for example, to bake a cake
Attitudes - include ideas, opinions, inclinations, biases, and feelings toward something.
Knowledge - includes facts and information
Baking a cake requires knowledge of baking terms for one to understand and carry out instructions.
Energy - capacity to do work
Members of the family must be in good health of sound mind and body to be able to do their assigned work effectively
B. Nonhuman or Material Resources - things and elements which are available to the family and to everyone.
Time - made of short and long periods.
It is usually measured in terms of clock time—seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, etc.
Money - the purchasing power that helps one to acquire needed goods and services.
The Peso, Philippine currency, is used as an exchange medium for goods and services.
Goods and Property - can be durable, nonperishable, and perishable
These include food items, furniture, appliances, tools, and equipment owned and used by the family.
Community Facilities - available to the family include police station, park roads, public schools and library, health centers, government hospitals, etc.
Environmental Resources - rain, sunlight, air and soil
Help man provide for his basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing.
Family Values and Goals
What values do the family consider important?
comfort?
health of the family?
education?
efficiency?
Family goals are things the family would want to achieve.
If a family values education, its resources will focus on sending children to good schools and finish their education.
If it values comfort, it will use its resources to keep the house clean, orderly, attractive, and make it a comfortable place to live in.
If it values efficiency, it will buy appliances that will do household activities faster and easier.
Goals can be
short time - buying a dress, a watch, or food are short-term goals,
long term - building a house or buying a car
finishing one's, education until college is a long-term goal.
Family Needs and Wants
Needs - basic or essential to living
Basic needs:
food- keep his/her body strong and healthy.
shelter- to protect himself/herself and his/her family from the heat of the sun, strong winds and rain, wild animals
-provide him/her privacy to do his/her personal needs.
clothing - to protect his/her body from extreme weather
-to enhance his/her looks and make him/her acceptable to others.
Wants - desires
-to have or possess to give him/her enjoyment and satisfaction
Tips in Managing Resources Effectively
Use energy and time properly.
Know how to budget money to make spending worthwhile.
Know how to use, clean, and take care of appliances, tools, and furniture to keep them functioning well.
Adopt a cheerful and positive attitude toward work to make work easy, interesting, and enjoyable.
Assign responsibilities that can make one use his/her talents and skills in doing family chores such as cooking a delicious meal, recycling old clothes, or decorating the house.
Make good use of community facilities such as parks, roads, hospitals, schools, churches, and libraries to meet some of the family’s needs and wants, reduce spending, and realize family goals.

Real- life Application
Learners apply their knowledge of managing family resources to make informed decisions on budgeting, meal planning, and saving, preparing them for real-life financial responsibility.
