What is Teen Stress?

  • Stress is a physical response to a threat or some sort of pressure.

  • This response causes adrenaline rushes to help people deal with the present danger, which may just be an everyday pressure.

  • Usually, the conflict is resolved, and the stress relieves.

  • Sometimes the stress is long-term, which can lead to discomfort and medical conditions.

How is Teen Stress Caused?

  • Some common causes of teen stress are social and relationship stress, school stress, family stress, world event stress, and traumatic events stress.

  • Right now, COVID-19 may be causing teens additional stress. Check out our COVID page to see more information.

  • Lack of time and expectations from family and friends are also common causes of stress.

  • At school, specifically, teens may worry about homework, tests, extracurricular activities, and social groups.

  • Teens may be stressed about bullies, having a good relationship with their teacher, or making friends.

  • They also may have a fear of failure, more responsibilities, or worries about college and the future.

  • At school, there isn’t a lot of time for teens to step away from the stressors and take a break, which can sometimes make it worse than if it was caused in a calmer environment.
