Reducing Teen Stress

How Can Teens Reduce Their Stress?

  • Teens can reduce stress by eating and exercising regularly, having a good sleep routine, avoiding drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and a surplus of caffeine, learning relaxation exercises (yoga, meditation, etc.) and knowing how to tell people about how they feel.

  • They can practice by learning how to break down tasks, decreasing negative thoughts about themselves, and learning to be satisfied with “good enough” as opposed to “not perfect.”

  • Teens can make lists and set goals. They can learn to say "no" to manage how much they are taking on. This lets them focus on accomplishments rather than what they can't do.

  • Taking a break from stressful situations can also help.

  • Teens can stop and do activities they enjoy.

  • If a teen feels overwhelmed by stress, they can talk to any trusted adult to help them. They don't have to keep it to themselves.

What to Do if the Stress Won't Go Away?

If the stress has been long-term and long lasting, then there are two things to consider.

  • One would be that the stress is caused by something that constantly around a lot or had a big impact. In this case, parental help should be sought first, and then they can decide what to do next.

  • The other possibility is that the teen may have anxiety or depression. This is very serious, and help can be sought from guidance counselors at school. It is also always best to make sure that the teen is able to see a doctor, who will have the best advice on what to do about the stress.

  • They can also use the tips listed, as they should still help to some degree.

  • Teens should try to stay connected with both friends and people who can offer help and support.

  • There are many websites and numbers teens can go to for help. Some can be found on the More Resources page on this website.
