Week 1
Week 1
This picture is our first teams meeting. Here we discussed how we were going to tackle the problem. We discussed what the plan was for Wednesday and we exchanged ideas and research we’ve done.

This picture is the picture of the stoneflower. This picture illustrates the tour we’ve had last week. We got to know all the machinery available to us. Some safety precautions were also stated. We got information on who to contact for help.

A first sample of bioplastic was made with the use of coffee grounds (28 gr), agar agar (6 gr), water (160 ml) and glycerol (10 gr). It is relatively strong, has a slight flex and does not break apart easily.

Week 2
After the recipe from last week, we decided to try a new one. It was aimed to have better properties. It turned out a lot softer and more elastic than our first plastic. The coffee was dried in advance to improve quality.

After our first recipe turned out to have decent properties, and was simple to make. We decided to try and print out this substance to get a feeling of the usability of this material in this setting. Printing was a success, but had a very small timeframe of work.

We had our first experience working with the Stoneflower 3D. We managed to connect it via Pronterface, send pieces of G-CODE, level the bed and reorient it so it is easier to work with. Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to test printing in clay or bioplastics. #Stoneflower3D

Week 3
First but failed prints
We did some test prints with the stoneflower 3D and clay. Unfortunately, the results were not as expected. Not enough clay was extruded to build a simple cylinder because we forgot to reset the E-steps for the nozzle we were using.

Complexity of the challenge
We mapped out the complexity of the challenge on 3D printing with bioplastics. This gave us a better insight on what must be done. We came to the conclusion that everybody will need to work on another part of this project, otherwise it will take us to long.

More ‘manual’ printing
We did some more test with manual 3D printing with a syringe. We can conclude that the size of the nozzle has a big effect on the ease of extrusion: the bigger, the better. We managed to make some small structures that currently are drying.

Week 4
Reuse of bioplastics
By adding a little bit of water to an old sample and then putting it in the microwave we were able to reshape it. We think the bioplastics can be reused. You can also see the shrinkage of the sample very well in comparison with the mold.

Looking for new recipes
Last week we experimented further with proportions. We saw that the test prints of week 3 were failures. Without pushing hard on the printed shaped they already broke. So this week we added more starch and more glycerol to make the prints stronger. We also decided want get rid of the agar agar to reduce production costs.

Wednesday we had a meeting without second team coach. The biggest topic was: what can we do as a team that can help Glimps. While talking we learned a lot what Glimps is doing at this moment. Glimps is also using coffee waste for some projects and can provide us with some coffee waste for our own experiments.

Week 5
First bioplastic through stoneflower
The bioplastics we made were until now all manually printed to test strength and flexibility. But as of now, we put the bioplastic into the stoneflower for the first time. This helps to accurately see how the final process will look like.

Rest of the bioplastic
We kept the rest of the bioplastic that we had made last week to reuse next week. It was a big ball but unfortunately it did not dry well. The inside is still very wet and there is mold developing on the edges. We can use this sample to test the compostability.

Broken fitting
One of the fittings that connects the extruder to the ram of the stoneflower 3D broke. With the help of Yannick Christiaens we are looking for a new piece.

Week 6
We did a LCA on the coffee grounds. The LCA is supposed to visualize what happens with the coffee during its life. And how and where it ends up after its life.
#LCA #Miro #biometerials
We rescheduled the meeting with Dimitri due to a problem with the press at glimps. This meeting is now set Wednesday 24 march. We will receive some high quality coffee there.
#meeting #glimps #coffeegrounds
We had a work in progress presentation last Wednesday. This was the case for every group. We learned a lot from the other groups and we were happy to showcase our work with the rest of the class and stakeholders.

Week 7
Visit to Glimps
Last week we went to Glimps in Gent. There we met with Lucas . He explained us what they are doing with the coffee waste. Lucas told us about the machines they are using and what problems they are struggling with and what problems they already solved. They also showed us what some of the outcomes are of their processes and what could be interesting for us. We got 2kg of their coffee waste that they already processed and contains less oil and shredded into much smaller bits than the coffee we used so far. We are very thankful with the new coffee waste and we can’t wait to test this and see what differences that its makes compared to what we have so far.

Meeting with Matthew
Jenthe had a meeting last week with Matthew. Matthew is a fellow student. And they talked about how our source of coffee works and what they do. With this source we mean Glimps. They also discussed some of our recipes and Matthew gave us feedback and some info about what they are doing at this moment.

To school only when necessary
Our teachers announced this week that because of the new covid rules we can only go to school only when absolutely needed. So we will continue working on our Miro and do all the tests we can. And when we can go to school we test everything we did at home on the 3DP.

Week 8
Meeting with the eggshellsteam
During the brake, Jenthe had an online meeting with the group who work with eggshells. Because their goal is similar to ours it was interesting to work together on one topic (passing on the knowledge). It was interesting because they also use the stoneflower 3d printer and they also have to make a recipe to make a surtain waste material printable. During the meeting they concluded that a workshop with both materials would be the most interesting outcome. In this workshop the participants will learn how to work with the stoneflower and how to print with the eggshells and learn also how to prepare the substance with coffeewaste.

A new stakeholder
Last week we got a mail to announce that our stakeholder Dimitri from glimps has changed. Our new stakeholder is now Lucas. We already had a meeting with Lucas who showed us what they where doing at the moment and how as well. Lucas will now continue to monitor the project and also do some tests with coffee and PLA. And our group will try to help where we can.

Workshop next week
During the meeting with the group from eggshells we concluded that a workshop with both materials would be the most interesting outcome. In this workshop the participants will learn how to work with the stoneflower and how to print with the eggshells and learn also how to prepare the substance with coffeewaste. In this way everything we learn will not be lost.

Week 9
We went to the atelier last week to make videos. These videos were about making the filament as well as how to operate the stoneflower printer. These videos will then be permanently available to the public so everyone will at all times be able to use the printer with the required filament.
#eggshells, #videos, #knowledge
We had a meeting with the eggshell team. To organize a workshop. We discussed the flow of the workshop and how we will make it all happen safely. We found a solution and we are looking forward to making this work.
#eggshells, #workingtogether, #workshop
Last week in the atelier, Yannick approached me to print with the PLA + coffee grains to make it into filament. Unfortunately we did not succeed as the machine wasn’t heating up as fast as expected. And we left before we were able to finish it. We also had a misunderstanding about the importance of this past of the assignment.
