Wood (chips)

Challenge: Many processes (if not all!) in our atelier generate scraps. A scrap of production is different than 'waste' because it is recurrent, and predictable. For example, I can anticipate that 3% of my plate material gets discarded during laser cutting processes. Working with the lathe is a good example: when we work with it, we produce a huge amount of wooden chips (the process is substrative!) of which we know the most important characteristics. Many challenges raise:

  • can we design in a way to decrease the scraps produced in our atelier?

  • once we have them (unavoidable) can we valorise them in other ways?

  • can we create new bio-based materials starting from them?

  • which applications are suitable?

  • how can we engage stakeholders in this process?

Starter kit includes:

  1. Ingredients of interesting materials to mould

  2. Samples of interesting materials to mould

Infrastructure needed:

  • Cooking pot

  • Various techniques depending on the identified application
