Week 1
Week 1
Team work! Standing on the compost place of previous year. Ready to make big improvements
#ugent #biofablab
Set up of our first iteration. Simple cold composting, the samples are spread out on the grass and protected by a box of stones
#endoflife
All the different samples used in iteration 1
#biobasedalternatives
Week 2
The rain and warmer weather left an impact on all the materials. Some broke down faster and others became more elastic. We are doing research on composting and how we can manage the process.
#biofablab #composting
We inspected all the trash bins around campus.
This will form an idea of what gets thrown away on a daily basis and how we can insert it into our system.
#trashhunting #trash #composting
To get an idea of how people will adapt to separating materials in the workshop, we placed two in the workplace. This will tell us what materials get thrown away and how this will tell us if we can form a balance in nitrogen and carbon to be suitable for composting.

Week 3
We set a more concrete goal this week so we could get a better understanding of what has to be done. Doing this enabled us to divide tasks while still feeling confident we are moving in the same direction.
#goal #teamwork
This project overlaps with a lot of other groups. We met up with group 15 to exchange ideas and figure out how we could work together during this semester.
#Teamwork #Meeting
By doing an interview with Hannes & Brecht, we discovered how they manage the scraps in the atelier. We also asked for pain points and possible improvements in their system. This gave us a better understanding of improvement. Next week we will conduct more interviews with multiple stakeholders.

Week 4
After doing extensive research on composting, we are putting the knowledge into system archetypes.
#systemarchetypes #composting
We created a template to maintain an overview between groups. The template indicates which waste they produce in all itterations and what can be done with the watste.
#Overview #Waste
We interviewed the compostmaster who is responsable for wijkcomposteren in Kortrijk. This gave us a bigger understanding how other systems work in the area.
#Wijkcomposteren #Kortrijk
Week 5
We are further exploring the possibilities for what to do with the biowaste.
#compost
We created a beautiful poster to accompany the bin.
#sensitize
Working out the system to compost the biomaterials requires a lot of communication and exanging ideas. We are currently in contact with IMOG and groupgardens around Kortrijk.

Week 6
Week 7
A life-cycle assesment will quantify environmental impacts of bio-based material composting. In this early stage, we defined the goal and scope definition of the framework.
#LCA
After interviewing Ellen, we have a fuller understanding of the existing system. Now we are working out different ideas, how these ideas will be tested on the system and how we can transfer knowledge that makes the system understandable for everyone in it. #Interview #CleaningSystem
The knowledge we gained in the last 7 weeks are being translated to archetypes. The BOTG make it possible to predict how the system will react.
