“If you have knowledge and see a man weak, do not condemn him. Go to his level and help him if you can. He must grow.”.- Swami Vivekananda.
Dr. Naveen B. P. is a seasoned academic, researcher, and professional in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering. He earned his B.E. from UVCE, Bangalore, followed by an M. Tech in Geotechnical Engineering from NITK Surathkal, and completed his M.S. and Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. His doctoral work, focused on “Assessment of Leachate Characteristics & Geotechnical Properties of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills,” significantly contributed to the reopening of the Mavallipura landfill in partnership with BBMP and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
Currently, Dr. Naveen is serving as Professor & Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training & Research (NITTTR), Kolkata, under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. He is also the Nodal Officer for NCVET at NITTTR Kolkata. With over 20 years of combined experience in teaching, research, and industry, including 8 years post-Ph.D., he has established himself as an expert in his field.
Dr. Naveen has published over 90 research papers in journals and conference proceedings, including more than 40 SCI/Scopus-indexed publications in reputed journals such as ASTM Geotechnical Testing, Environmental Pollution, and Measurement. He currently serves as the Chief Editor of an international journal and has reviewed manuscripts for leading publishers including Elsevier, SAGE, Taylor & Francis, and Springer.
Dr. Naveen’s significant contributions to the field of geotechnical and environmental engineering have earned him several prestigious honors, including the SERB TARE Award, IEI Young Engineers Award, Peace Ambassador Award (Sri Lanka), Professional Excellence Award, ISSMGE Foundation Award, and the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Award. In 2019, he was selected by the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) as one of two Young Geotechnical Scientists to represent India at the 9th Young Asian Geotechnical Engineers Conference (9AYGEC).
Dr. Naveen is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), and the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS).
An innovator at heart, Dr. Naveen developed the Pile Modelling Design Kit using PLAXIS 2D & 3D, designed to train Geotechnical Design Engineers. He is proficient in advanced software such as PLAXIS, Pollute, Deep Soil, Shake 2000, Geo 5, and AutoCAD. Furthermore, he managed the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering course at the International Geotechnical Centre, Lima, Peru.
Dr. Naveen has worked on high-profile consultancy projects, including the Surat Metro Project, the Bangladesh Railway Project, and the Installation of Handpumps in Barmer & Jaisalmer Districts. His international experience spans countries such as Bangladesh, China, Kenya, Japan, and the USA. He also mentors the Civil Engineering Department at the Uma Charan Patnaik Engineering School (Government of Odisha) and serves as a Technical Advisor at SJB Institute of Technology (SJBIT), Bangalore & Adamas University, Kolkata.
A passionate educator, Dr. Naveen has led several pioneering initiatives, including the Centre of Excellence in Waterproofing Training & Research and the Computational Civil Engineering Laboratory at NITTTR Kolkata, equipping students with cutting-edge tools and training. As Nodal Officer, he played a key role in securing NCVET Dual Status for NITTTR Kolkata, enabling it to function as both an Awarding Body and an Assessment Agency.
Dr. Naveen has also played a leading role in organizing academic conferences, most notably the 1st International Conference on Green Technology & Sustainability (ICGTS 2025). He successfully mobilized over 120 research papers and secured key sponsorships for the event. The conference papers published in prestigious journals such as Environmental Sustainability and Materials Circular Economy, further demonstrating his commitment to advancing sustainable development.
To bridge the gap between academia and industry, Dr. Naveen organized the industry-Academia Conclave at the NITTTR Kolkata Extension Centres in Bhubaneswar and Guwahati. These conclaves focused on fostering collaboration to enhance the learning experience of polytechnic students and faculty, better preparing them for real-world challenges in civil engineering.
Dr. Naveen has been instrumental in securing MoUs with several organizations, such as Sarathy Geotech & Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd., RASTA, Old Dominion University, Sunway University and Dr.Fixit, MIDAS Software, strengthening civil engineering education and research at the national and international levels.
In addition to his academic and research roles, Dr. Naveen led a geophysical survey using the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW) method, as part of the foundational assessment for the Chenab Bridge Project. This critical survey, conducted in December 2015, played a pivotal role in evaluating the subsurface soil conditions and shear wave velocity profiles, providing vital data for ensuring the geotechnical integrity and seismic resilience of the bridge foundations.
A key achievement in Dr. Naveen’s career is the cost-effective concrete pavement project at NITTTR Kolkata. Serving as a model of sustainable engineering, it functions as a living laboratory that bridges infrastructure development with practical technical education.
