Focus Ireland and the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin have collaborated on a new report, Focus on Homelessness. (Below)
Since 2014, the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government (DHPLG) has published data on the number of people living in emergency accommodation each month. In addition, Quarterly Performance Reports and Financial Reports have contained data on the duration and cost of homelessness in Ireland each quarter.
Focus on Homelessness aims to make this substantial body of data available in an accessible and reliable format. By condensing this data into 17 key indicators, Focus on Homelessness provides a detailed report on the extent, nature, duration and cost of homelessness in Ireland.

As the dust settles on #Budget2020 we take a look at the key measures announced for Housing and Homelessness.Peter McVerry Trust CEO Pat Doyle said "I welcome the fact that more funding and more housing will be delivered because of Budget 2020. The Minister and Department of Housing have been able to secure funds that will accelerate and increase social housing delivery, aid town regeneration and see increased availability of homeless services."Even in the context of very constrained budget with the Climate Crisis and Brexit measures have been secured that will ensure progress on housing and homelessness in 2020 and beyond."- €2.5 Billion is the Biggest Ever Capital Housing Budget- €166 million for homeless services across the State in 2020- €130 million to the urban regeneration fund for large towns- €20 million for a new social housing energy upgrade project- € 17.5 million to the Land Development Agency for Social units- The Living City Initiative for Gerogian Buildings has been extended and will help us secure new homes in city centre buildings.

There is a Poverty Crisis in the UK and We Need to Talk About It
A homelessness crisis. A food crisis. A debt crisis. All these crises are connected to and exacerbated by poverty. Despite being one of the richest countries in the world, there is a poverty crisis in the UK.
In the UK more than 10 million people were living in poverty in 2015-16, and between 2012 and 2015 three in ten people were at risk of poverty, including working families.
We may also be on the brink of a sharp rise in poverty, with child poverty continually on the up.

The number of homeless camps forcibly removed by councils across the UK has more than trebled in five years, figures show, prompting campaigners to warn that the rough sleeping crisis is out of control and has become an entrenched part of life in the country.
Tents, cardboard structures and a garden shed were among the hundreds of homeless encampments torn down by local authorities in the last five years, with the number of tent city clearances rising from 72 in 2014 to 254 last year. More here from the Guardian

Congregations push UN to confront homelessness

An Post has launched Europe’s first fixed address service for the homeless.
The postal service said ‘Address Point’ will allow homeless people to receive mail relating to medical appointments and applications for schools or jobs.
It will also help them stay in touch with loved ones.
The “free, simple and secure post office-based service” will be available in every county in Ireland.
It generates a personal address based on a person’s choice of local post office – which then becomes their mail collection point.
A number of homeless charities were on hand to help An Post launch the new service this morning. More here

One in four primary schools have homeless pupils, survey finds:
More than one in four primary schools across the State have homeless children who are suffering from anxiety, poor self-esteem and exhaustion. That is the finding of a survey conducted by the Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN) which says many schools are providing a “safe haven” for vulnerable children. More here

The number of homeless people, last February, exceeded 10,000 for the first time, including 3,784 children. More here
This does not take into account:
- Those living in refuges
- Rough Sleepers,
- Over 700 in Direct Provision who have had a positive decision but cannot access safe affordable accommodation.
Focus Ireland has identified eviction as the primary cause for the worsening homelessness situation. Some unscrupulous landlords are using proposed property sales or refurbishment plans as justification for serving notice on tenants with capped rents with a view to achieving future, higher prices. As the acquisition of entire apartment buildings by investment funds becomes the norm, long-term legal security for compliant tenants – as in other European countries – is needed.

A new scheme which aims to slash the rent of a two-bed apartment by more than €500 a month has been unveiled. More here It aims to help solve the housing crisis by building thousands of homes and offering them at rent up to 25pc below the market rate. The typical rent for a two-bed apartment in south Dublin would fall from €1,850 to €1,302 a month under the proposed scheme.
