We have a very anaemic sick pay scheme meaning that the social welfare system is weak. Currently we cannot self isolate, take time off or even get sick as there is no cover for the short illness. There has been no consideration given to the what next scenario once everyone achieves Living WageWhat's the impact on businesses who have to pay this money? Too many exclusions / derogations undermine the Living Wage plan. We are overly dependent on those who work for the minimum wage. If we must increase to the living wage the experience is that employers squeeze labour to achieve savings: e.g. sweating the labour in hotels flipping 6 mattresses as opposed to 5 breaking the back of labourers. High living costs raise the minimum wage. Rent, makes a big difference. In actual fact the cost of housing has increased but many other costs eg food have decreased.
We must put workers at the heart of the living wageCollective bargaining brings more People closer to the living wage. It allows worker to set those own agenda. Some would prefer an increase in hours rather than an increase in hourly pay. 31% of people are on a low wage. A Bad Deal is when the government claim low tax economy for low paid but transport and other costs increase out of reach. To note: International women's day. Women are paid least in work.

The important point relative to the living wage is an AGREED amount and that this therefore constitutes a social floor. What of the Community &Voluntary sector, precarious funding prevents employers from paying the living wage. Recession saw huge cuts to funding as yet not fully restored.
AGENDA 2030 commitmentsWhat of the Social Contract to Leave No One Behind (LNOBL See graphic Below
For consideration. 1. What universal basic services will be required by all demographic cohorts between now and 2051? 2. How should these services be designed and resourced? 3. What would a minimum social floor for every member of society look like over time? 4. What is the best way to combine this basic floor of income support and universal basic services to ensure improved social progress and enhanced wellbeing for all?
