Intensive Korean

The Intensive Korean Program

Seoul Campus

About

Intensive Korean is a special language training program offered by the Center for Korean Language and Culture (CKLC). You will not find this program in the course listings because it is not a credit-bearing class.

1. Certificate of Completion

You will receive a certificate from the Center upon completing the program. Some of your home universities might allow credits upon completion of this program. Talk with your home university’s coordinator about if and how many credits you can receive.

2. Complementary Periods

Levels 1-6 are offered free of charge for exchange students during the Fall & Spring Semesters. However, Level 7 is a special interpretation/translation course and is not offered for free to exchange students. For more information: www.korean.ac.kr.

3. Non-complementary

This fee cannot be paid internationally in advance.

4. Schedule

The Intensive Korean Language Program runs:

    • Monday to Friday
    • 9am-1pm
    • 10 weeks total
    • 200 hour certificate program.
    • There is no language proficiency requirement for this program.

If you plan to take this program during the winter or summer sessions , do not enroll in any regular classes from 9:00 to 1:00 pm (Periods 1 - 4) in the Spring or Fall. The intensive Korean language courses begin several weeks before the regular semester ends; the schedules overlap!

We recommend that students taking the intensive Korean language program only register for 1-2 regular courses, if any. This program is very intensive and time-consuming.

5. Attendance

A minimum of 80% attendance is required for this program. If you fail to comply with this attendance requirement, you will be required to reimburse our office for the program fee. We recommend this program to students with Korea-related majors or who are serious and determined to learn the Korean language.

Survival Korean

Seoul Campus

For those not enrolled in the Intensive Korean courses, we offer an introductory, “Survival Korean” class in the evenings for students who are beginning Korean learners. Similar to Intensive Korean, this is a non-credit, certificate-only course.

This course is usually two evenings a week, for 2 hours at a time. It is free of charge but you need to pay for your textbook (approximately 25,000 KRW).

Information regarding this class will be provided during the New Student Orientation. You can register only after you arrive in Korea. We will send out a sign up form by email so we can make course sections and assignments, and then we will ask you to come and confirm your participation in our office in person.
