Spirit of Motherhood

The PRADAA Lab offers a range of culturally sensitive interventions for Black children and mothers in the Cleveland, Akron, and Canton areas that aim to reduce stress and anxiety. Our goal is to improve the well-being of Black mothers and children and strengthen the family unit. We invite you to explore these options to learn more about the support we offer through our intervention projects.

To participate, please contact Keaton Somerville (ksomerv5@kent.edu) or Diane Robinson (drobin57@kent.edu). You can also call or text 330-552-8959.

Written Exposure Therapy

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is an effective 5-session intervention for people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that incorporates writing to process difficult life experiences. Many people have found that WET helped reduce PTSD symptoms like flashbacks, guilt, and anxiety. We offer one-on-one WET sessions to pregnant and postpartum Black moms as a path toward acceptance and healing.

If you do not have PTSD, we also offer a 5-session stress and anxiety intervention called Sisters Offering Support (SOS).

Spirit of Motherhood

After completing WET, mothers can join a 4-session group parenting training led by doulas in our community to provide Black mothers with the skills to manage parenting-related stressors. Mothers who participate will practice skills in each session and learn how to: 1) self-evaluate and praise one another, 2) effectively supervise, 3) set developmentally appropriate expectations for their children and themselves, 4) focus on praising appropriate behavior, and 5) set and enforce rules for difficult situations.

Music Intervention

We also offer a group musical intervention for preschool-aged children that aims to incorporate instruments, singing, and moving to help them learn how to cope with stress and regulate their emotions. While mothers are participating in the Spirit of Motherhood, their children will complete the 4-session musical intervention at the same time and the family will practice skills together.
