Managing projects is like conducting an orchestra.
As a Project Management Professional (ie, PMP certified) I enjoy a good process or flow. Repeatable steps are reassuring and promote consistency. But I find that where the real project and product management happens, much like in music, is in the space between the process or notes. It's about deciding (or rather helping others decide) what to do among the many possibilities in an artful way.
Ultimately a maestro allows the orchestra to play the notes. A conductor provides focus and guidance for everyone else so that the process moves on it's own and in it's most effortless and beautiful state, and to the delight of both the orchestra and the audience.
