We made it to Gdansk! The view of Poland from the plane appeared to be hodgepodge of places we have lived in the US between the plants, trees, terrain, and house architecture. The airport was a bigger version of the one in my town, but a similar feel and a much desired reprieve from the bustling chaos that is Frankfurt.
Public Transportation: Check before you leave to ensure there are no public transportation or taxi union strikes; we have experienced this on other tours, but not this one. For tipping at the taxi, ask them to round up to the next euro if using a card.
Souvenirs: We like to take a collapsible tote that zips into a pouch for souvenirs we may not want to ship back to the US (though we have shipped back heavy items in the past. On the way back, simply check your suitcase while keeping necessary items with you like any prescription medications or a change of clothes in case of flight delays/cancellations. We also highly recommend purchasing things that you will enjoy around the home or use like pieces of artwork or a scarf. You will fondly remember your trip each time you see or use one of these!
People Watching: Plan on settling into the new time zone with people watching. This is as much of the experience as is going to the museums. Why not enjoy a meal or coffee at an outside table like the locals? It is all about embracing the experience and immersing yourself as much as possible in the things you cannot experience back home.
Shopping: Gdańsk is the best place to find a wide assortment of amber jewelry and at a fairly inexpensive price (especially compared to back in the US). There are a wide variety of artists designing these, but the price is fair from one location to another. You may find that you like the ones on Mariacka Street like we did with all of the original stairs and animal-themed gutters like we did.
Kristen's hotel room
Plenty of room and a heated towel rack to dry laundry
As we have experienced with Rick Steves tour hotels, the hotel was centrally located within walking distance of most things you would want to see. Tomorrow, we will do some expiring in our own, visit St. Mary, go to the Amber Museum, and check out the local shopping; nothing too taxing as we get over a little bit of jetlag. The next day we will play it by ear and go to some of the museums not on the tour. Who knows... if the weather is good, we might even go on a boat tour (surprisingly relaxing from our experience on the Best of Ireland tour in Kinsale).
Typical breakfast Kristen ate each day: Sausage, vegetables, eggs, and fruit with a cappuccino. Many locations had yogurt.
Laundry time!
