In modern day, governments are always advancing their country's technology in order to keep the upper hand in the case of a war outbreak. This is no different than in the Parallel Universe that is the Fantasy World. Warriors are being supplied with better weapons, magical explosives are being developed, and of course, bioterrorism is being researched in every Kingdom. Unfortunately, research has gone wrong in the Paldea Kingdom, and they have accidently released a virus now being called... the Darkness.
Research on the Darkness has concluded that it is very contagious, so contagious that simply being within close range to one will cause you to catch it. It's also been noted that it affects people very differently depending on how good or evil they are morally.
Studies show that prisoners who have been known for committing terrible acts of crime and other kinds of fearsome predators in the animal kingdom gain glowing red eyes and a purple aura around their bodies upon being infected. They seem to be a bit mindless, almost like they are zombies, and have full intent on killing anyone that doesn't have the same qualities as them. There doesn't seem to be anything that can currently cure them...
Paldea's finest warriors have been sent out to combat against the infected, but upon getting close to them, they became infected as well. Just... not in the same way. Surviving warriors were able to tell us that it felt like all their strength was being drained from them. Magicians were not able to cast spells, Knights lacked the strength to wield their swords, and just about any other ability you could think of was completely nullified by this infection. Many of Paldea's warriors died that day, but the few that returned were able to confirm that their powers would return if they were no longer near the infected. This certainly does present quite an issue on how to combat it. How is one supposed to fight against the Darkness if it is so easily contagious and it strips away the power of those who are good? It sounds like a losing battle and that it is only inevitable that they will end up taking over the world, leaving only the bad infected and the good all killed off...
Thankfully, the Galar Kingdom (King Arthur's Nation), has already been on the case for researching how to combat it! We discovered that what the Darkness is doing is affecting not the body, but the soul of it's target. It either corrupts an evil soul, or it nullifies a good soul. It seems that there is no soul within this universe that isn't affected by it. With further research into Galar's Dynamax power, the Galar Kingdom has created a device that allows one to swap souls with another from a Parallel Universe. This other soul is different enough to where it is immune to the virus and cannot be affected by it in any way.
The goal now is the build up a new army of what they call "Linked Pairs" and train these new souls to kill all of the infected and bring an end to the virus. However, there have been rumors that these souls are more than just immune to the virus, but also have the ability to cure those who have been infected by the virus! More research needs to be done first, and the soul needs to master the powers of the body they now control, so it will take some time before we are able to get to that point.
The Dynamax Wrist Band that is being reconfigured into a Tablet that will be used to swap souls with your parallel counterpart.
The Darkness is NOT what it used to be in Fantasy High!
Story aside, it's important to know that despite being called the same thing in Fantasy High, the Darkness has been completely reworked to be something entirely different! In Fantasy High, it acted as a Dark Electric Cloud that only the Heroes could see, and anyone within those Dark Clouds would have their 7 Deadly Sins Amplified, making everyone from regular townsfolk, to animals, to evil people... worse people than they were before. Completely wipe that from your mind as that is no longer how the Darkness operates.
As stated in the story portion, the Darkness effects people based where on the morality scale they lie. Of course, you may be asking yourself, how does one determine where on the morality scale they lie? That will lead into our next part.
is a bully and makes others feel bad, but there’s a limit to it or it's only in good fun
is selfish and wants to sign up to help King Arthur only to save their own life
has been misguided, but believes their reasons to be just and there is actually some merit to it
has been terribly misguided, but can be reasoned with if talked to and is willing to ask for forgiveness
has a noble goal, but it requires the sacrifice of the innocent
has abused and taken advantage of the innocent for purely selfish reasons (pedophilia, pet abuse, etc)
actively enjoys the suffering of others in its purest form
has been terribly misguided, but refuses to be reasoned with in any fashion
You may have also noticed that you are able to purchase what is known as a "Villain App". These are special NPC characters that are on the alignment of evil, but have a resolve or a will that lets them overcome the darkness when infected by it! These characters are so set on accomplishing whatever their goal is, or have so much pride, that they do not get the regular traits of the darkness, such as becoming a glowing dark zombie that only is out to kill and infect others. No, what the Darkness does to these villains, or rather... what the Villains do to the Darkness, is that they absorb the Darkness's energy and use it to boost their own power instead.
There are no visual changes to these characters, and they lack the regular infection spreading qualities that the Darkness provides (so they don't infect or nullify powers of others when in proximity). Instead, their own powers are simply boosted to make them stronger than a Hero, even at their fullest strength so that they may carry out whatever their evil plan is. Think of them as Super Villains.
Majin Vegeta from Dragonball Z is a good example of this. Babidi's Magic gives you a significant power boost, but at the cost of having to follow Babidi's (The Darkness in our case) orders. However, due to Vegeta's pride and desire to fight Goku, he is able to ignore Babidi's order and simply have the power boost instead.
No. They were simply researching bioterrorism for their own Kingdom and made a grave error, and now the Paldea Kingdom is Ground Zero for this virus.
Also no, killing will certainly do it. But a special prison is being constructed to hold the infected until they are able to be purified.
A campus member soul from a Linked Pair must learn their Hero's 100% move and use it on the infected. Everyone's 100% move has the ability to purify. Villain characters, like a regular infected, can also be purified. They will simply lose their power boost and return to what they were before.
Most likely not. Not from the current Darkness virus if they are still evil. This is still uncertain though, as the Darkness Virus itself could advance and be able to infect them once again if not fully extinguished.
They can be either or! It will be up to you to decide how they get infected. If you decide they are evil and become zombies, then that cannot be reverted until they are purified.
Any type of feral Pokémon that is considered a Predator and could seriously injure a Human character will become infected, such as Bears, Lions, Wolves, etc. Pets would not be infected as they are tame.
As of right now, most of the Darkness is in the Paldea Kingdom, and it is slowly making it's way into Kalos. Very few, if none, have made their way into the Galar Kingdom. Every other region such as Unova, Kanto, Sinnoh, etc, are too far away for the Darkness to have spread there yet. This is a new virus and has not had it's time to fully spread yet.
If a Hero is to flip sides and become evil, then they will be forced to give up their tablet and in turn, the ability to swap bodies with their college counterpart. The tablet is not functioned to work with an evil soul. If this is the case, you will have to remove your linked pair from the group and make them into a Solo or Villain character instead. As for a Villain, this character has already been infected and cannot be redeemed until they have been purified. For solo characters, their morality may flip as much as you like, as long as it makes sense and it's before they have been infected.
