Over my junior and senior year I began to help develop social media channels for Southridge High School's student media. Before my junior year, it was hard to promote the work that students put out, whether it be through digital content or yearbook photos. I took a lot away from the JEA spring convention in Anaheim by taking multiple notes on how to further develop social media through Instagram and Twitter. This year we began to cut out segments of our Hawk Talk TV show to put on Twitter which helped increase viewership from outside the school. On the yearbook side, I helped brainstorm a way to share some excess yearbook photos from events so that more people can see what work our program is capable of producing. Over the years, I have noticed an uptick of views and followers including from some professional accounts that enhanced coverage of what we have done through retweets and shares. While we still have a way to grow, getting the program into the social media world was a big step that can hopefully be built on once I graduate.
My work in helping develop Southridge Student Media channels helped prepare me to take on running the Stumptown Footy Twitter account. Stumptown Footy is an SB Nation blog that covers the Portland Timbers (MLS) and Thorns (NWSL) and during games I sit up in the pressbox of Providence Park and live-tweet from the accounts. After the game I head down to the locker room where I gather quotes to tweet out for fans to get an inside look at the team. The account has over ten-thousand followers which has taught me how to pay attention to what I tweet knowing that what I write can be seen by thousands of people. Overall running this Twitter account provides me invaluable experience covering a proffesional sports team game in and game out and will help prepare me for what I want to do in the future.
Above are a couple of examples of the games that I live-tweeted over the summer.
