Sports Beat Writer & Editor of Southridge Squawk (10th-12th)
As the Southridge sports beat writer, it is my job to attend different sporting events and to provide recaps on the night the game takes place. Outside of events, I brainstorm potential feature stories that we can run both in the yearbook and on the website. When other people cover events it is my job to edit their stories to make sure that they are ready to be published for the rest of the school to see.
Occasionally I will write profiles and feature stories on students in performing arts and with other unique stories to be published to the website.
Over the years I have gone from covering mainly football and basketball to covering soccer and baseball while developing longer feature stories on different subject matters.
Yearbook Staff Writer (12th)
After two years working within digital media I decided to test myself by taking yearbook. It is my job to take on more advanced assignments while helping copy-edit my peers pages alongside the copy-editor. I also help students with writing main stories and captions to help make the yearbook as proffesional-looking as possible.
Producer, Sports Reporter, Writer, Editor: Hawk Talk TV (11th)
During my year taking TV News I learned how to take on many different roles and how to work as a team to produce something greater than an individual article.
Over the year I wore many hats to make sure that our broadcasts ran as smoothly as possible. As sports reporter, I attended different events and gathered VO to use for a sports segment in the weeks show. During the week it was my job to take the VO and use Adobe Premiere to assemble it into a SOT to run in the weeks show.
As an editor, it was my job to write the scripts for the anchors and other reporters so that they knew what they were saying during an episode.
Finally, as producer it was my job to formulate a rundown at the beginning of every week as well as leading the show-planning meeting to formulate recaps for that weeks show. I also had to check in on students to make sure that they were doing their jobs as well as tying up undone VO's, Packages, and VO/SOT's so that the show can run on time.
Sports Play by Play Broadcaster (12th)
Over the second half of the basketball season, I got the opportunity to experiment with another field of journalism: play by play broadcasting. For four games, a ten-student team put together a live show involving three cameras, a director, producer, graphics coordinatior, and much more. I helped lead the effort by organizing setup before games before getting behind the "mic" with my note cards to call the game. While this opportunity has come late into my senior year, it was a cool experience that makes me more curious about working in the TV or radio industry in the future.
OSAA Today- Student Contributor (11th-12th)
At OSAA Today it is my job to go to local high school events and provide timely game recaps the night of the game. While writing for the state's athletic association, I had the opportunity to cover state tournaments, playoff games, and the Les Schwab Invitational tournament where I covered six games in four days. It is a website that alows my work to be seen by more people throughout the state and provides me with more experience that I can take into the future.
Prep2Prep- Student Contributor (12th)
Prep2Prep is the student-media website affiliated with C.J's Press Pass. This year it has given me the opportunity to get compensated for my work. As a contributor it is my job to cover local high school events and publish the articles for everyone to see.
Stumptown Footy- Social Media Manager and Contributor(11th-12th)
At Stumptown Footy I wear two hats as I help provide coverage for the Portland Timbers (MLS) and Portland Thorns (NWSL). As social media manager it is my job to provide live updates at games from the press box as well as gathering quotes from the post-game press conference and locker room to provide insight to the thousands of followers.
In addition to what I do at games, I provide feature-type stories as well as news updates to keep the website churning. With the access I am afforded through a credential, I am able to gather quotes and tell good, news-based stories about both teams while practicing working in a professional setting.
Blazer's Edge- Contributor (12th)
As contributor at a big NBA fan blog such as Blazer's Edge it is my job to help tell the stories of the team and write individual analysis-based features. While I do not get as much access as at Stumptown Footy, there are more readers, and I am afforded more creative opportunities as I work with a bigger staff of writers.
