Communities

Community:

1. A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.

2. The condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common.

(Dictionary.com)

• A community is a group of people with a common background or with shared interests within society who may live in a similar area.

• Definitions of community have shifted from being primarily related to individuals living in the same area to focus more on aspects such a social relationships, a sense of belonging, common norms and social interaction as the primary reasons for community formation.

Communities can emerge as a result of geographic, interest based or purpose built reasons. The most common reasons for community formation are:

• • Locality/ geography

  • Culture

  • Religion

  • Politics

  • Business

  • Sport, leisure & recreation

  • Music

  • Friendship

Next to each reasons, write down two examples of communities that has been formed because of this reason. For example, location/ geography= Galston Swimming Club, Dural Riding Club

Research Task

Research the your local Community by using the following link and typing in your suburb:

Search Census data | Australian Bureau of Statistics (abs.gov.au)

1. Identify 10 different topics/categories that can be used to describe the make up/ demographic of your local community. Some examples may include language spoken at home, marital status, family blending, method of travel to work etc.

2. Investigate how your community has changed from 2001 to 2016 in terms of population, ancestry and family composition. Present these findings in a table.
