Over the week of May 11 - 18, five young scientists from the Peace Region competed at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Joshua Street from Bezanson, and Vijeth Castelino, Jonathan Goudreault, Mitch Davis, and Joshua Hewko - all from from Peace River - represented the Peace Country at the event that gathered the country's top 500 young scientists for a week of competition, discovery, and celebration. Congratulations to Jonathan Goudreault for winning a bronze medal!
On behalf of the PCRSF committee, we would like to congratulate each of you for the countless hours of hard work and dedication that earned you a spot among the best and brightest in the country. Moreover, we'd like to thank you for being amazing ambassadors for the Peace Country - the maturity and poise that you showed all week long was incredible, and did not go unnoticed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and hope to see you again next year.
Finally, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank the delegates that chaperoned Josh, Vijeth, Jonathan, Mitch and Josh to Fredericton. Mr. Frederick Castelino and Mr. Adam Rhodes: thank you for volunteering your time and effort, without which this week would not have been possible.

Denis Gagnon has been instrumental in the design and implementation of the Peace Country Regional Science Fair (PCRSF). Six years ago, Denis and a group of us wanted to present an event for the students of the Peace Country that students would work hard to attend. We wanted the fair to mirror the strong science that flows through the Peace Country. Denis Gagnon's fingerprints are still evident throughout our fair. Denis worked hard to make sure our Francophone students were accommodated and provided many hours of translating our documents from English to French. He also streamlined our paperwork by developing and incorporating Google docs, forms and sheets to deliver a fair that was collaborative and organized.
Denis spent many hours with our president, Jonathan Pittman, sitting with companies, government and organizations securing funding to run the style of event you see today. Denis brought a consistently high energy to the fair. Even though he would work long hours to set-up and help run the judging day, you could be sure to find him rocking the show and bust out his best moves on the dance floor late into the night! Denis has always been, and continues to be an advocate for students and excellence in science. He has a passion for science, helping youth succeed, and for life in general.
Denis is a dedicated husband to his wife, Whitney, father to Lima and Mia and a great friend to many of us and this fair!
The PCRSF committee is extremely proud and honored to present Denis Gagnon with the 2019 honors of Long Service Award as well as Outstanding Contribution to the Peace Country Regional Science Fair. Congratulations Denis!

If you could parse that, congratulations! If you couldn't, click on the word that gave you trouble and learn all about a fantastic mathematician! (Even if you could parse it, you can still learn more about Emmy Noether if you want to; just click the link!) Tomorrow is fair day and we hope that you are as excited as we are to participate in the 36th annual Peace Country Regional Science Fair. We have posted an electronic version of this year's program where you can find a schedule, sponsors, and a list of this year's participants. Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers, and good luck to all the young scientists.

There are only 3 sleeps until the 2019 edition of the PCRSF! To tide you over until Friday, here's a little bit of weird science: wouldn't it be nice if your phone didn't stop working in the cold? Well, there is some research being done that may help with that problem, with researchers cooling a tiny electronic chip to -273.15°C! To find out more about this cool (I couldn't resist) science, check out this link. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Belle Centre this Friday.

50 years ago the first manned mission landed on the moon. Thankfully, you don't have to wait that long to participate in some exciting science! The 2019 PCRSF is less than a month away - March 15 and 16 at the Belle Petroleum Centre in Peace River, to be specific - and a preliminary schedule has been posted here. We are all very excited to see the results of your hard work, and look forward to meeting you soon!
