Over the week of May 12 - 19, five young scientists from the Peace Region competed at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Ottawa, Ontario.
Amara Drefs and Brayley Emter from High Prairie, and Izzy Shewchuk, Kaitlyn Coen, and Dane Gall from Peace River represented the Peace Country at the event that gathered the country's top 500 young scientists for a week of competition, discovery, and celebration. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Coen for winning the 'Engineering Innovation Award' for her project 'The C-Trailer'.
On behalf of the PCRSF committee, we would like to congratulate each of you for the countless hours of hard work and dedication that earned you a spot among the best and brightest in the country. Moreover, we'd like to thank you for being amazing ambassadors for the Peace Country - the maturity and poise that you showed all week long was incredible, and did not go unnoticed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and hope to see you again next year.
Finally, we'd like to take this opportunity to thank the delegates that chaperoned Amara, Brayley, Izzy, Kaitlyn, and Dane to Ottawa. Mrs. Patricia Richards and Mr. Adam Rhodes: thank you for volunteering your time and effort, without which this week would not have been possible.
(PS: Oscar is the pink and purple owl in the photos. In case you were wondering 'what's the owl's name?', now you know!)

If you didn't get that (admittedly awful) joke, follow the link in the title. In all seriousness, it's fair day - one of the most electrifying days of the year. We hope you're as ecstatic as we are to participate in the 35th annual Peace Country Regional Science Fair. We've posted an e-version of this year's program where you can find a schedule, sponsors, and the list of current participants. Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers, and good luck to all the young scientists. (Also, don't forget to have a little fun!)

For those of you who will be attending the fair from out of town, the Sawridge Inn in Peace River has generously provided us with a block of rooms at the discounted rate of $99/night (includes breakfast for two). To take advantage of this pricing, please phone the front desk (780-624-3621) and mention that you are with the "Science Fair" group. We'd like to thank the Sawridge for supporting the Peace Country Regional Science Fair again this year!
Completely unrelated: today is 'Pi Day'! Lucky for you, NASA has created a 'Pi in the Sky Challenge' to celebrate the occasion. Head on over there and see some of the ways your favorite mathematical constant is used by NASA scientists and engineers. Also, don't forget to have a piece of the 'other' pie (sweet or savory) - scientists get hungry too! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the fair next week.

With this year's fair just over a month away (schedule), we are excited to show off our new posters! We have three different designs (below), each with just a little bit of interesting science built right in - from abstract mathematics to zany astronomy. Have a look, do a little Google-ing (there are keywords at the bottom of each poster - you might just learn something!), and share them with everyone you know!
As always, this is the site where you can find registration and scheduling information. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact one of the board members. We look forward to seeing you in March!
