How clean are apples?
Janessa Bourlon & Isabella Pozniak
On our project we used PDA to see how clean apples are. We tested 2 stores in Valleyview and 2 stores in the city washed vs. not washed, and bagged vs. loose. THen we monitored the results for 7-10 days. Our results showed that bags are dirtier than loose, and the city was dirtier than Valleyview, and washed were the cleanest.

I chose to do my experiment on lie detectors. I explain where the invention of the lie detector comes from, its usefulness and I have my own lie detector to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Our project is about whether or not you can bake a boxed cake without some of the ingredients listed on the box. The purpose of our experiment was based off the fact that boxed cakes are often donated to food banks, although the people who are to receive them might not be able to afford the other listed ingredients, we want to see if they could bake a cake without some of the ingredients for an occasion such as a child's birthday. For our experiment we baked four boxed cakes, the first one had all of the ingredients, the second, without canola oil, the third, without eggs but with oil, and the final with nothing but cake mix and water. After we baked the cakes we tasted them and took our notes. We then brought the cakes to school and had our classmates do a taste test and rate them on a rubric of four topics, flavour, texture moistness, and an overall rating. Finally we compiled results by combining all of the points for all of the cakes, and finding the mean and mode of the "overall" results for all four cakes.

In my presentation I will explain what an ecological footprint is and the importance of it. I have given examples of ecological footprints, explained how they are measured, the world Canada and Alberta interventions, and given a few ways on how you can reduce your own footprint. I also focus mainly on our carbon footprint. I explain what it is, how it measured, and lastly how it relates to an ecological footprint.

For this project I grew bean plants using different solutions made from commonly found items. The aim of this project was to see whether there was a cheaper way to fertilize plants without using commercial fertilizers. I tested water, sugar, honey, molasses, rice, and coffee grinds to see how they would affect the growth of a bean plant. To see the growth of the bean plant I looked at the difference in height as well as the number of leaves. I watered the plants with the solution every three days, and added regular water when needed.

My project is all about the mites that kill our bees. I went to the beehives and tested Multiple hives. I calculated numbers and added medicine to the hives. The purpose of my study is to find out what medicine/Acid would kill the mites. My motivation is I want the beekeepers of the next generation to know what acid to use!

Me and my partner wanted to know if music can affect you and we recorded our test trials (people around our school) to see if different types of music can affect their blood pressure, heart rate and mood. We recorded their results before the music, during the first song and during the second song. Here is the procedure copy and pasted that we used on display for our project...
1. Find a quiet place and set up and sanitize earbuds and area
2. Bring in test trial and record their name and mood on chart
3. Take initial blood pressure without any music and record their BP and HR
4. Trial puts on earbuds, switches arms that the blood pressure cuff was on and listens to the first song
5. A minute into listening we will record their BP, HR and mood again.
6. Switching arms again we change the music to the second song and their BP and HR is recorded again during listening.
7. Last results are written down, equipment is sanitized and start on a new trial and procedure is restarted.
Trials were encouraged to close their eyes and take deep breaths..

We chose to do our experiment on the harmful effect of sugar on our teeth. We present several foods and their amount of sugar. We will also tell you several interesting facts about our teeth and how to take good care of them.

We did the history of the Detriot Diesel. We did the explanation of how the 2 and 4 stroke versions work. We did the why we did this project. What is the difference between the 2 and 4 stroke. We did the chemical formula also.

With my project I found some suitable chunks of wood and sanded and cut to size and shaped like a square barrel and shoulder stock. Bought two 1 litre sprite bottles, and gorilla tape. Taped the two 1 litre bottles together at the spouts and cut the end out the end at the front of the frame and made a hole at the end closest to the shoulder stock. Bought a12 feet long vinyl tubing and 6 zip ties fashioned into 2 large zip ties and fit them around the spouts and the barrel of the frame. Wrapped the vinyl tube around the bottle and into the hole, bought a propane bottle and mapp gas bottle and a blow torch nozzle. Stuck the nozzle into the exposed end of the vinyl tube, attached either mapp or propane to the blowtorch nozzle. My variables would be how long I keep the gas flowing, How loud my popper can get and the distance from my target. The purpose of my project is a less lethal pest control example would be a bird is eating your dog's food or going through your garbage and you want to get rid of it without killing it.

Solar Empowering Community. My research project proposes Community Solar (CS) as a solution for the disadvantages of residential solar panel systems.
Community Solar is defined as any central project or program designed to distribute the benefits of solar within an area to multiple households.
I researched solar power and how it works, a deeper dive into the technology used and being developed. It explores if and how CS bridges the gaps between solar energy and the people who need it the most.
Further understanding the factors that make solar energy not as widespread, and what makes community solar as a suitable alternative compared to other renewables and energy sources. These factors include but are not limited to costs, weather conditions, maintenance, government support, carbon footprint, and incentives.
