The two-story library has been completely renovated during my five years at IST. The overall mission was to create an open, inviting, and flexible space for our community. We got rid of the oversized, dark wood staircase and circulation desks and opted for an open spiral-ish staircase. The upstairs was repainted in calming colors, neutral curtains replaced the maasai plaids, a projector and large screen were installed with surround sound, and all of the tables and chairs were replaced with mobile, stacking or nesting ones. Downstairs the school carpenters were able to lift the ceilings and relocate the air conditioning units so they were no longer blocking the windows, letting light pour in and transforming the space. I moved the middle school collection downstairs, and the younger students appreciated having their own place. I ordered bright colored chairs and 'bucket' seats, colorful rugs and painted bright yellow. Last year we added a Lego Wall, which has been constantly in use ever since. The finishing touches were canvases painted by students and teachers to hang in the downstairs library. It's created a popular and comfortable space for the IST community!
