For years students at Moreland Road would read a book and then take an A.R. (Accelerated Reader) test. Read a book, take a test. Read a book, take a test. On and on and on. A.R. tests were designed to determine whether or not a student has read a book, not to assess comprehension and higher thinking reading skills.
We decided our children need more. So in August of 2007, the Media Committee met and designed a reading program that would instill in our children a love of reading. We wanted children to love books and reading instead of reading for "points" or rewards, and there was plenty of research available to support this decision.
The result is the "m & m" club (the school mascot is the Moreland Mustang). It is a standards-based reading program that requires students to read grade-level books or book equivalents. For each book, students create a project that uses higher levels of thinking to show their comprehension of the book. This allows for differentiated instruction, uses the multiple intelligences, and most importantly - it's fun.
