I love technology, and it is a part of life now - especially for students. Just because they appear to be experts at anything digital, though, does not mean that they know how to best use technology for learning. Especially when it comes to research. I have been actively working with teachers to integrate information literacy skills, especially digital literacy skills, into the MYP curriculum, with great success. As the librarian, I have the unique opportunity to be in all classes, all grades and all subjects and make connections for students (and teachers!) and to scaffold these skills across the curriculum.
Here are the the recommended research skills by grade level I established for the Middle School:
Below is a sample of my lesson plans for the collaborative units I worked on with grade 6 students. Smart searching, website evaluation and note taking will be introduced in science as they study the growing acidity of the earth's oceans, a topic that is difficult to find reading-level appropriate information on. For their Ancient China (Humanities class) project we have purchased ebooks for students to use for research on their iPads, and I will be introducing the Big 6 Research Process, and continuing with good note taking skills to avoid plagiarism.
