Some before photos of the Howard Connect Book Nook:
I was so grateful to have a foundation of books donated by HCA teachers. This made it much easier to hit the ground running.
We had 4 computers, 4 tables, some homemade bookshelves, and a couple new black bookshelves.
Building the Book Book
Face out books! Just rearranging the shelves so that more books faced out immediately helped students to engage more.
Diversity Audit: Students helped me complete a diversity audit of the collection to see how we measured against the publishing norms and what we needed to order.
I was able to use a Jr. League grant to get funds for bookends, laminate for covers, labels, etc. That meant I could use the county budget for BOOKS!
Almost there!
About 2/3 of the collection has been organized according to Genre, and is now catalogued and labeled! Book circulations have grown from less than 30 last year to over 2,000 as of February 2022!
The Book Nook was moved to a bigger room this year! We also got some new shelving and seating, as well as a cool down corner. It's called "Some Space" for when kids need just that - some space to calm down, reset, and be able to get back to learning. It's what I felt like our kids most needed, and it's definitely been utilized a lot already. The Rubix cubes are a favorite calm down tool.
In the mornings we leave the overhead lights off and fairy lights on, and it's a favorite spot to chill.
