At present, the Pennsylvania Medical Board has one reserved seat for non-physician professions overseen by the Board of Medicine.
This includes:
Midwives
Physician Assistants
Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners
Licensed Athletic Trainers
Licensed Perfusionists
The term for this seat is 4 years. This means that only once every 16 years a midwife will be appointed to represent our profession on the PA Board of Medicine.
If passed, the Midwifery Modernization Bill would establish a Midwifery Advisory Committee to the Board of Medicine
The committee would be comprised of board certified midwives and physicians who would advise the Board of Medicine on the regulation of midwifery as a distinct profession from the practice of medicine
