PREVIOUSLY - CAMPAIGN DIARIES 63 - THE GAME IS AFOOT
The Owlbear League's HQ had suffered a fireball that killed a dozen agents of the Zhents, The Eye, and pedestrians including Floon Blaagmar. It was somehow cast by a nimblewright from the rooftops, and through some detective work and help from the urchins, they went to the House of Gond and borrowed a nimblewright detector from Nim. They spoke to the Blackstaff who reminded them the stolen gold would be pursued by many, and it was only safe back in the hands of Waterdeep government where it belongs. Some clues to led them to the nimblewright salesman Zardoz Zord and they had an interesting dinner with him. They returned to their boarded up townhome as Orryn and Immeral secretly investigated the Grulhund villa where the Gralhunds in league with The Eye were double-crossing agents of The Zhentarim. In this midst of this betrayal and a massive battle, the nimblewright returned and grabbed the Stone of Golorr from The Gralhunds. He was too fast to chase, but they believe he is heading to the Cassalantar estate, the only ones that Zord confirmed had purchased a nimblewright. Now The League regroups and figures out their next move to get this stone and seek revenge for hurting their wards, killing Floon (who had an intellect devourer within him), and damaging their tavern. In addition, they just might find a million gold dragons.
Orryn says "Can I talk to everyone for a moment? They all gather round because it sounds serious.
"I need a break from all this. I did my part, but I want to go back to Daggerford and be with Lady D, even if she is sleeping for the next couple of months. I don't want to be a part of Zhentarim fighting or Xanathar guilds, or nimblewright detection, or million dragons, it's all just a bit much." The League nods, but has little to say. "You're welcome back any time." Nowhere says and with that there are hugs all around, but there are no good-byes, they have been through too much. Atlas says "Keep your message box, you know how to reach us." And with that, Orryn hands to ring of invisibility to K'ronk and goes up to pack.
The rest formulate a plan. Nowhere says "We have to stay focused, there is a lot more we can lose here. Our townhouse, our place in Waterdeep, our friends, our children (and she looks at the urchins). We have the nimblewright detector, we think we know where the Nimblewright might be going - to the Cassalantars. We go there, see if we detect, and then decide what to do."
The others agree.
As they step outside the townhouse, a sinister figure watches from across the street and signals to them. They wave him over and he approaches. He introduces himself as Zid and says "There's a person you must speak to." and Nowhere replies "Who the hell are you?"
"I'm no one of consequence. You were at a warehouse in the dock ward, you met some kenku that broke into the warehouse. The warehouse owner has some information for you. Information about who killed Floon."
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDhikr8TYC_kA3I9YOgsPzOQ5DqcM9ooDfFMSvm3SFuFZQIQvP205ULz0jAEMg2FvcTkdkntC4003NiT3H5_ja9MrfNr9qEgpnt_26dvkl95ZDtMOvkx3e2N3S8TnrujRjgTWf5vRy7a9h/s2048/103638832_1166096.waterdeep.jpg
Immeral replies "You think we are just going to walk into a sketchy Zhentarim warehouse with someone we don't know waiting for us?"
The man, if he is a man, says "That's where the answers are." and he walks off. He calls back "I wouldn't wait, he doesn't stay in one place too long."
K'ronk says "The Eye, or the Xanathar or whatever you call them had a bunch of kenku working for them, then they killed a bunch of the warehouse people, the Zhents. The kenku was in the with mind flayer too, and there was a half-orc in the sewers, so The Eye aren't just kenku."
Nowhere asks "Didn't we get in a fight with The Eye once already?"
Dain says "You've been in a fight with just about everybody." "True" Nowhere replies.
The League agrees to follow the mysterious person since they walk south towards the dock ward. They spend the better part of half an hour walking that way in the cold, and as they arrive at the warehouse, the man turns a corner and disappears. Immeral casts mage armor.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/forgottenrealms/images/7/77/Manshoon.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20211108060917
Before long, The League is back at a familiar warehouse in the dock ward, repopulated with workers watch with wary stares as they enter. Black winged serpent tattoos can be spotted here and there.
The workers clear the office area, and signal to The League to wait. A few moments later a man in wild attire and a mask appears.
"Greetings, Owlbear League, I have heard much of you. You may call me Manshoon." he begins. "I have information for you, and a deal." he adds.
"I like deals." says Atlas, flippantly.
"I will share with you who killed your friend Floon Blaagmar and how it was done. In return you must disrupt the organization that did it."
"Agreed." says Atlas, almost too quickly. "Who was it?"
"The Xanather Guild. The Eye." Manshoon asks before her companions can interrupt, locking them into a deal they don't yet understand. The lesser of two evils.
Nowhere slows things down a bit "the Eye is the lesser of two evils", she says while looking right at Manshoon. "What are you suggesting would disrupt them? Kill some? Get the authorities to break them up?"
Manshoon continues. "Right now, the Eye searches for the lost gold dragons of Nevermember. With a million gold, they will become an unstoppable force in Waterdeep. It is not known what evil they will bring. Slavery and murder will grow unopposed. I propose this. We disrupt them by getting our hands on this gold for ourselves, and splitting it evenly."
Nowhere glances at her companions. "We may disrupt The Eye and grab the gold, but it's going back to the city."
Manshoon adds "You are free to do with your half whatever you want, but you've already received the information you asked for. You will need me to find the places where we can hurt The Eye the most."
Nowhere responds "We already saw the mind flayer in the sewers, we knew it was The Eye."
Manshoon replies "But you don't have this." and he pulls out a wand. "This is a wand of abberation detection."
"This wand is the only way you can keep yourselves safe, your children safe, your friends safe. Otherwise how will you know if anyone has been compromised? These are exceedingly rare, and may only be the first way you will need my assistance to destroy The Eye."
The wizards confer for a moment and state "Detecting aberrations is near impossible without something like that." Seraphina says, "I can detect evil, but I don't know if it will work through a skull, and it only works within 30'."
"If we work together then everyone wins. The city gets half its gold back, and an evil criminal organization is destroyed." Manshoon makes a compelling argument.
Nowhere glances at her team to read the room "and we end a gang war." She turns back to Manshoon. "I don't like making deals with money that isn't mine." and Manshoon replies "Finders keepers. If I find the gold on my own, there's no share for you or the city."
Nowhere looks at the unwavering eyes of Mashoon and on behalf of The League says "give me the wand" and she hands it to Immeral.
"We should report in to the Blackstaff, that way we're in the clear. Plus we can take down both organizations with the help of The Blackstaff." Nowhere agrees.
Immeral says "We can check her tower for aberrations too."
K'ronk says "We're screwed if she's an intellect devourer."
Nowhere adds "Maybe the Cassalantars are devoured too." and they head to the Blackstaff Tower in the Castle Ward.
Along the way Nowhere asks "How do we know that wand is what Manshoon says it is?"
Immeral and K'ronk look at each other. K'ronk casts identify on the wand and confirms "unless it is cursed in some special way, it is what he says it is".

In the shadow of Mount Waterdeep stands the Blackstaff tower, and The League knocks with a large doorknocker. The gardens outside are lush, even in winter and the grass green, at least for fifty feet around the tower.
A pleasant apprentice wizard opens the door and says "I am Kelben, how may I assist you?"
"We are here to see the Blackstaff at her request." says Nowhere, looking around within the ornate structure where several magic-users can be seen moving to-and fro, busy even at this late hour.
"May I ask what this is regarding?" asks Kelben.
"It is a private matter." says Nowhere.
Kelben replies "Please wait in the receiving room", and he points to a nearby room with a table and chairs.
The League agrees.

As they wait, they watch apprentices and wizards passing by and going about their business, carrying books, carrying other pieces of equipment. They hear a little pops and maybe a minor explosion from above somewhere and a shriek or two. Just wizards doing their thing. They are moving about with food and it smells good. A pair of guards stand by the exit doors nearby, but they appear pretty casual.
From above, into the room comes the Blackstaff, right through the ceiling above and the guards take a more attentive stance.
Always to the point, the Blackstaff asks "What have you learned?"
Immeral speaks and says "with mind flayers being a problem right now, may we use a wand of detect abberation on you?"
"May I see it?" Savja asks, and when Immeral holds it out, but does not give it to them, clearly casts a spell on it. "You may." she adds.
Immeral activates the wand and the wand glows and it turns towards one of the guards by the doors. The guard's head starts glowing red, and he starts looking around, not understanding the nature of what is going on.
Immeral looks at Savja and she immediately points her staff at the guard and encircles him in a shimmering sphere of energy.
The man starts banging on the barrier, yelling something and it does start rolling. He can be seen, but not heard at all. "I had no suspicions of Meloon. This is troubling." The other guard looks alarmed and the busyness in the tower comes to a halt.
"Alafras." she calls, and a novice comes to her. "Yes Blackstaff?"
She looks at the wand for a second, but the man was in range and is not glowing red. "Levitate Meloon up to the research room and start gathering research on abberation detection. Detect evil will work, but that is usually a shorter area of effect and we need to check the entire tower."
"At once." and he casts levitation upon the sphere and brings it up the central stair to levels unseen.
She turns back to The League. "I would like to save Meloon, but I am not sure anything short of a wish or resurrection will do so. We will see. Whose villainy was this?" scowling.
Nowhere says "We had rescued Floon Blaagmar, Renaer's companion several months ago when the Zhentarim had kidnapped them both. The Xanathar killed the Zhents, but got Floon and Renaer confused and took Floon. We found him in a secret lair in sewers which had a mind flayer which teleported away. We thought we got there in time to save Floon, we must have been too late."
Immeral says "The Eye must have been using the intellect devourers to extract information from him, they must have quickly found out he was not Renaer, but he still made a useful spy."
Nowhere adds "We met with Manshoon of the Zhentarim tonight." now Vajra seems a bit surprised with maybe a 1mm rise of her eyebrows. "He asked for a meeting. He said it was The Eye that killed Floon, and that we could partner in fighting The Xanather guild and splitting the gold. He supplied the wand and made it clear that if he gets the gold first, it's all his. Feeling threatened, we therefore agreed, but we have no intention of giving him half the gold, that's why we are here."
"Keep me apprised" says the Blackstaff. "Anything else?"
Immeral says "The nimblewright. We learned from Zardoz Zord of the Sea Maiden's Faire that he sold a nimblewright to the Cassalantars." Vajra's eyebrow goes up another millimeter. "We believe this may be the nimblewright which caused the fireball, although why a rich family might be involved in a gold chase is unclear. We believe the nimblewright has the Stone of Golorr and we think we have a way to find it."
"You have my thanks." says the Blackstaff and with that she flies up through the ceiling of the room.
After a good night's sleep and checking in on their wards and guests and the The Owlbear League returns early in the morning to the House of Inspired hands to see priestess Valetta. She is glad to see K'ronk especially and the rest of The League. K'ronk asks for a blessing upon their townhouse and a protection from evil spell with permanency cast to help against their abberation problem.
Valetta replies that "In light of the fact that you've made such a significant donation to our order (1,000 gold)," Valetta easily agrees. "The high priest is not available today, but I will request an audience as soon as I can. I would think a donation of maybe 700 gold may be in order for the high priest's time." K'ronk says that he understands.

The League decides to take a pass at the Cassalantar villa on Delzorin street. The winter day is clear and mild, and the streets of Waterdeep are filled with their normally bustling populace.
They stand a moment on the corner nearby and take in the estate, which has a high wall around the gardens and with more windows seems a bit more open than the Gralhund villa. Guards can be seen moving about, so they are security conscious, which is none too suspicious for the owner of a bank.
The League engages the nimblewright detector, but nothing happens. There appears to be no nimblewright in the area. They continue
https://i.stack.imgur.com/7y81M.jpg
The League heads back down Delzorin street, past Trollskull Alley towards Gralhund villa, using the nimblewright detector the entire way. It makes little whirs and clicks every so often, but detects nothing along the way. They pass the Gralhunds with nothing detected. There is a City Watch presence still at the villa, and the estate is cordoned off with a bright yellow rope.
The League continues on, following Saerdoun street towards the magnificent view of Cliffwatch overlooking the farms around Waterdeep. They are guided only by the direction Immeral said the nimblewright ran towards when it got away from him.
As they get near the end of the protective wall surrounding Waterdeep, and the view opens up, the nimblewright detector starts whirring and making a beeping sound, pointing away from the cliff and deeper into the city.
CAPTURE p2 1:02:29
Down near Endcliff Lane, a dirty little alley leads The League to pile of garbage near some of the rattier houses of the North Ward.
K'ronk detects magic, but finds nothing.
Atlas and Nowhere start digging into the trash and the pile explodes. The green-clad nimblewright slashes out with its sword, attacking The League.
Nowhere tries to grapple the creature, hanging onto it and preventing it from escaping.
Seraphina casts command on the nimblewright, unsure if it will work on the construct, and she commands "halt!" but the spell does not affect it and it still struggles to fight.
K'ronk tries a sleep spell on the creature which seems to have some effect, but it shakes off the spell and continues to fight.
Atlas tries a flurry of blows enhanced by her magical gauntlets, but it blocks the attack. Atlas presses harder, punching and kicking and this time she starts battering the creature. She tries to knock it prone, but Nowhere's grasp on the creature actually helps it avoid the fall.
Immeral grabs at the dagger the nimblewright is wielding in one hand, wrenching it away from the construct, but it still has its rapier, and it stabs at Nowhere, slashing her badly across the slide.
The creature swings wildly again, but fails to hit the second time.
Nowhere hangs onto the creature as Seraphina tries to command the nimblewright again, but it fails to work.
K'ronk tries again, trying the powerful sleep spell and this time it works. The construct cannot shake off the spell, and it drops unconscious. K'ronk says "We have a minute!" and the The League ties the nimblewright up with Atlas's magical rope of climbing to ensure it cannot break the bonds.
The words "What are you doing?" comes from behind them and three members of the City Watch are standing there.
"We're tying up this nimblewright that attacked us." Nowhere says "We're bringing it to the Blackstaff."
The watchpersons look at each other and question "nimblewright, what's a nimblewright?"
Nowhere says "It's a construct, a machine. It's gone a bit crazy. It attacked us."
"Hold on, just hold on." The Watch clusters together as other onlookers start gathering. They whisper to each other a bit, and there is some quiet debate for a moment.
"Does it talk?" the dwarven Watchman calls over.
Nowhere says "No. Talking no, sword slashing yes. But we disarmed it."
At this point the nimblewright wakes and starts struggling. Immeral activates the wand of abberation detection but does not detect anything.
"Machine thing, can you talk?" asks the dark-skinned, white haired Watchman. They get a bit closer and say "Nimblewright, is that your name? What is going on, why are you fighting with them?"
The nimblewright doesn't answer and starts smoking and sparking, getting damaged in its struggles to free itself.
"Who's the owner?" asks the dwarf Watcher.
Nowhere replies "We don't know, that's why we're taking it to the Blackstaff. Can you escort us to her tower?"
The female Watcher says "I don't think that's necessary, it's a machine, it has no rights. Go ahead and bring it."
The League shows visible relief as The Watch walks off. "Thank you!" Nowhere calls out and the few onlookers walk off as the alley is getting dark under gray skies this wintery afternoon.
Atlas notices a note peeking out of an inner pocket of the writhing, tied-up nimblewright, and she grabs it and unfolds it quickly.
It is a map to the City of the Dead, the great cemetery of Waterdeep, and it there is an X on one of the Mausoleums. "Does he have the Stone on him?" K'ronk asks, and they quickly search it, but find nothing.
Suddenly, from the struggling nimblewright comes a pop, then a whistling sound, and the smell of some strange vapors rises from the machine. It makes some further jerky movements, then stops moving. K'ronk gets his bag of holding and slips it over the creature to bring it to the Blackstaff.
It's nearly an hour walk from the east side of Waterdeep to the Blackstaff tower.
When met by apprentices at the gates to the tower, they are informed that The Blackstaff is currently unavailable.
"Is everything alright?" asks K'ronk?
"I'm sure it is" says the acolyte, truly meaning it.
Disappointed, The League returns to The Tavern, under the heavy guard of JidJack and team, and they go to the basement, open their vault, and extract the Nimblewright into their vault. The kids come down and see them extracting the construct. Jenks says "He's a-maze-ing!" and ask a pile more questions of the day's adventures.
K'ronk decides to keep the nimblewright in the bag of holding and leave that in the vault for triple protection. They then go up for some food and tell the team of their adventures of the day.
https://preview.redd.it/1wosbqj81py61.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=cf46d5789a2459df924c08f6ac15a1d946a6c36d
The League waits until later that night to enter the City of the Dead. The gates are closed at all the entrances, with towers on either side of the entrances, and guards manning the towers, looking over the both the city of mankind and the city of the departed. The wall is some twelve feet high with iron spikes across the top.
There are driftglobes floating throughout the space, lighting the cemetery beautifully and against the fall of snow making the place almost festive.
With few places to hide, and guards patrolling the grounds, The League decides to take a direct approach and knocks on the door of one of the towers.
A member of the City Guard opens a speaking window in the door and says "Who goes there."
https://www.thealexandrian.net/images/20200228b.jpg
Nowhere introduces herself and says "I'm on a mission for the Blackstaff and my companions and I need entrance to the City of the Dead."
"The Blackstaff, really" he says questioningly.
"We are an independent team she's asked to conduct an investigation."
"Like adventurers?" he asks.
She ignores the implied slight. "We need some information about the City of the Dead and figure you smart guards are the best to ask about it."
The guard still hasn't opened the door, but he hasn't slammed it yet either.
"Why are there so many guards in the City of the Dead?" Nowhere asks.
"To protect citizens from undead incursions." he replies.
"Has that happened?" she asks
"Oh many times. Then there's the rogue necromancer trying out some spell, grave robbing, corpse stealing, tomb raiding, crypt vandalizing, etc. That is why the City closes at sundown."
"Can you let us in and escort us to a specific tomb we need to investigate?" Nowhere asks.
"Absolutely not." says the guard "I'm a member of the City Guard, not a tour guide. Come back tomorrow."
"Tomorrow will work. Thank you!" Nowhere says as she turns and the guard shuts the door. "K'ronk and Immeral, you're up."
Taking a last look at the map, K'ronk dons his ring of invisibility while Immeral raises his hood on the robe of stars and both disappear.
Immeral walks right through the gates in the border ethereal, and K'ronk casts a flying spell and rises over the gates and flies over to where the X was on the map. It is a unique tomb of black stone. They arrive at a similar time although they cannot see each other, and learn it is the Cassalanter family tomb.
What is a surprise is they are not alone. There is a group of fighters, men and women, dressed in black to hide in the shadows of the floating driftglobes. They approach the Cassalanter tomb.
They walk up to the doors of the tomb and close the unlocked door behind them.
K'ronk panics and starts screaming "Help! Break In! The Cassalantar tomb." He stays invisible, and watches as a knight arrives.
Capture P2 1:39:40
The knight starts looking around, unsure of where the yelling was coming from.
K'ronk, still invisible, hears very muted fighting from within the tomb, a fight of some sort is taking place, but it may be only he can hear it.
K'ronk bangs on the door of the tomb, and the knight starts looking around the building cautiously.
Immeral continues to watch the doorway from the ethereal plane, assuming that K'ronk had not found a way in.
As the knight investigates around the back of the tomb, the door to the tomb flies open, and the dark-clothed group runs out from the tomb and towards a southern entrance to the City of the Dead. They run to south, and K'ronk follows in the gray mirror universe of the ethereal plane.
https://www.thealexandrian.net/images/20200228b.jpg
The black-clad figures race to the southeastern corner of the graveyard, staying to the shadows and avoiding the driftglobes. They get to a hexegonal tomb and use the tight space between the tomb and the outer wall of the City of the Dead to climb to the top of the wall. They guards inside the nearby tower are nowhere to be seen, but Immeral doesn't take the time to investigate, he passes through the wall to follow the dark figures.
Back with K'ronk, the knight finds the tomb open, and rather than investigating himself, races towards the nearest towers, flailing his arms from time to time to get someone's attention.
K'ronk slips into the tomb, still invisible.
K'ronk quickly sees that the tomb is empty, but there are stairs leading to a lower level, and his darkvision helps him see there is blood on the stairs.
He goes down, knowing he only may have seconds before the guards arrive. On the lower level of the museum are many sarcophogi-filled nitches that break the walls. There are no undead here, but there are three bodies, freshly killed, bled out on the floor of the tomb. One female still lives, coughing up a bit of blood, terror is in her eyes and she tries to reach her sword but cannot.
K'ronk slides the sword away, removes his ring of invisibility and goes to her aid.
"No more, please, no more!" she pleads.
"It's OK, I'm not here to hurt you." and K'ronk tries to render first aid.
"They already killed my husband." the woman cries.
"What happened?" K'ronk asks.
"I was attacked by the Zhentarim." she says "I saw their winged snake tattoos.
"What were you doing here?" K'ronk asks.
"I was recovering something for Victorio Cassalanter. Something he needed was being dropped off here. That's all I can really say." she moans in pain and K'ronk cannot stop her bleeding. "I think I'm dying." she cries.
"Help is on the way." says K'ronk.
"If I don't make it, the Zhents said they were going to the windmill." the woman moans. "Tell Victorio, he is offering a huge reward for this green stone. It is the key to a treasure the Cassalantars are trying to recover for Waterdeep."
The woman passes out.
K'ronk is about to use the amulet of the dead to try to talk to the dead man, but the doors above open and he slips the ring of invisibility back on his finger. He ducts past the arriving force of guards led by the knight, and as they assess the situation, K'ronk slips outside.
He casts fly again and returns to the street where The League waits.
Immeral continues to follow the assailants through the ethereal plane version of the Trade Wards and into the southern ward of Waterdeep where the homes and buildings quickly become more run down and decrepit.
The zhents keep to the shadows and alleys but eventually make their way to an old run-down windmill and they enter the building. At that point, Immeral removes his hood, and returns to the street where he left, surrounded by his companions.
"What kept you?" says K'ronk. "It's cold!"
"I followed the Zhentarim to an abandoned windmill in the southern ward. They went inside, but I came back to inform you all." Immeral replies.
A nearby resident pokes their head out from a building and shouts "Stop peeing in my alleyway or I'll call The Watch!"
"We're leaving" says Nowhere, and they start walking.
CAPTURE P2 1:53:20

The League starts walking south and they update each other with what they witnessed. Members of the City Watch pass by as The League makes there way, but they have no cause to stop them. They quickly arrive at Fishgut Alley and Wharf Street, nearly at the docks where the windmill stands.
This crumbling, two-story stone building looks as if the windmill existed before the city rose up around it. There are few light sources showing in the windows. There is a shorter attached building extending from one side.
A red and white sign which looks to be a butcher's cleaver hangs above the door of the shorter building.
"Maybe you should check things out first." says K'ronk.
"More waiting?" says Dain, bothered. "I hate waiting."
K'ronk dons his robe of stars again and enters the mirror universe of the ethereal plane.
He passes through an unmarked doorway and is inside a hallway (W9) with a flight of stairs to his left and several doors visible. The wizard decides to to take the stairs, and comes up by an ancient millstone, laying under a jumble of debris that includes machinery and pieces of the collapsed roof. Dust and cobwebs cover everything, but there are footsteps in every direction.
Immeral peeks through one of the doors and finds (W11) and finds it dirty but uninteresting. There is another door, but he moves on.
https://preview.redd.it/v37ewhbgn6q61.jpg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=7a48e8098f4ccd6e675d4aa44def74cacfaa0253
Immeral peeks through another door and finds a similarly run-down area (W11) where large sections of the roof have caved in leaving holes through which birds and precipitation can enter. The floors are littered with broken shingles, bird droppings, wrecked furnishings, and other detritus, and scores of pigeons roost in the moldy rafters. It looks like part of the floor has collapsed. Immeral moves on.
Now he moves to the south, and passes through the door leading to a different room (W14). This room is different. The door to this room has been fitted with a shiny new lock. This apartment is in good repair and there is a wood-framed, king-sized bed with clean mattresses standing against one wall. Next to the bed, there is a door in the west wall. The window here is sound, not broken like the other rooms and the ceiling is whole. Across from the window, against the wall, stands a wooden armoire. Inside the room, sitting at a small table, eating a meal by lantern light, is a male dragonborn.
He does not seem to bear any of the tattoos of the Zhents, but unusually he has a butcher's cleaver on the table. Immeral peeks throught he western door and finds a large privet (W15) which was once likely grand, but has some holes in the roof now and has also been decorated by pigeons. He is glad not to be able to smell from the ethereal plane.
Not finding anything of interest, Immeral heads back downstairs.
Immeral starts moving through the unchecked rooms on the first floor. He enters a the northeastern room (W7) with several persons inside, but they look like squatters in the nearly abandoned windmill. They have piles of belongings and makeshift bedding. They do not look like the well-equipped Zhents that Immeral had seen earlier. He continues through other similar rooms (W5, W4, and W3) on the first floor and finds several bands of squatters engaged in various states of rest, smoking, drinking or drug use.
He continues west, through the door into the next room (W2) and finds it to be the back room of the butcher shop (W1). What's interesting to Immeral, aside from the lack of sanitation, is that there are several dead bodies here, and one of them seems to be partially ground up for meat. Immeral fights his revulsion and confirms the bodies do not have any visible tattoos and they appear to have been murdered, with multiple stab wounds.
There is only a pass-through window between the butchery and the butcher shop. On the shelf of the window is a list of "recent deliveries" and the last one, marked has having left in the last hour, was to Cuttle's Meat Pies.
Immeral takes off his hood and instantly returns to the rest of the Owlbear League, telling them what he has found, including the ground bodies and not finding the Stone of Golorr.
"We have to go question the butcher." says Dain.
Walking back to the building, K'ronk casts detect magic, but sees nothing unusual outside. Nowhere says "We could try to catch up to that meat delivery first and then double back."
Immeral says "We don't know if that's related to the Stone though."
Nowhere replies "If not we come back and question the butcher, but right now we haven't done anything overtly illegal. We're not really deputized yet. Maybe we should be next time we talk to the Blackstaff."
Atlas says "We don't even know where Cuttle's Meat Pies is."
Nowhere says "We can ask The Watch." and they step out to better-lit streets to find a Watcher, which they do in short order.
"Sir, might you know where Cuttle's Meat Pies are located?"
"No, I don't, but it's a bit late for shopping isn't it?"
Dain says "they got a delivery of bad meat, and we don't want them to get people sick."
His fellow watchman does though, and says "It's in the Trade Ward - ask around there."
They do, and within thirty minutes they find the little shop down a cleaner alley than the last one.
The League gets to Cuttle's Meat Pies and finds that there is a horse drawn cart sitting in front of the business unattended. The horses sit in the cold night air, hopefully not left for long.
In the doorway next to the meat pie dealer, a woman hands something to a man and they both go into the building. It is small, something the size of a fist, but it is not clear what it is, or even if they are involved in their quest.
K'ronk says "Could that have been the stone?"
Immeral states "I can look." and dons his robe of stars, gliding the the ethereal realm closer to the neighbor building, when the man and woman quickly exit the same building. Immeral is close enough to hear the woman say "Kill the livery driver and dump him back at the butcher, but hold off on Ott. We need to find out what he's worth." Immeral sees on the wedge of her thumb, the winged serpent tattoo of the black network as she dons her gloves. The woman is clearly in charge, and she starts walking down the alley.
Immeral pops back to the corner where The League stands, and says "That woman just gave orders to kill the livery driver."
The man steps back into the building and Immeral returns to the ethereal plane and hustles back to the unmarked building.
Nowhere says "We could create a distraction by spooking the horses." The League debates this as Immeral passes into the building.
There is a man stoking a fireplace and a woman seated at a table nearby counting a pouch of gold dragons. They both look a bit rougher and tougher than your average commoner. There are two men tied to chairs and gagged. One looks to be a shield dwarf who wears a strange leather cap with near a dozen tentacle-like appendages which appear to be little fake beholder eyestalks.
The other man is human, and looks to be the driver, wearing the appropriate gear. Immeral returns again and says "There are two men tied up inside and a man and a woman counting money. We should go in."
Dain charges across the street, emitting nothing but a low growl and he throws up his shield and bashes through the flimsy door. The League quickly follows behind. The woman pulls out a dagger and the man shouts "who the hell are you?"
Nowhere answers "We're the fuck up your plans team. What are you doing?"
K'ronk adds "Just a few people tied up before a murder?" as Dain picks up the door and sort of puts it back in place to prevent prying eyes.
"You better mind your own business, you don't know who you're messing with. The black network makes its enemies suffer." The woman starts to stand and pulls out her sword.
Nowhere pulls out her sword and Dain pulls out his great axe. The others brandish their weapons as well.
"Where's the stone?" Nowhere asks.
"It's gone, you're not going to get it" answers the woman, backing away, seeing they are outnumbered. "The zhents have it."
Nowhere answers "Manshoon sent us. We can't trust anyone, we've been compromised. Who has it now?"
The couple looks at each other, confused and the man says "Vivette just left with it."
"Shut up!" the woman exclaims. "Who's your contact?" she asks.
"Manshoon." Nowhere replies.
"Nobody works directly with Manshoon." the woman scoffs.
"We're not nobody, or we wouldn't be here." Nowhere answers.
"Well, Vivette is bringing it to Manshoon, so you're too late. Amateurs." she adds.
"Yeah, amateurs, beat it." the man says.
"What are you doing with these two?" Seraphina asks.
"The driver knows about The Stone. He's seen too much and he's traceable - he can't live. The other guy is some nutjob that works for The Eye."
The driver starts struggling against his ropes. The other one raises his tied hands up to his face in fear. His tied hands clasp a tiny net.
Immeral says "This guy works for The Eye?" pointing to the strange shield dwarf.
His name is Ott Steeltoes, we caught him buying fish food down in the dock ward a few hours ago. Apparently he's important to The Eye, but nobody knows how important. He may be good for a trade."
The woman starts getting bolder. "You all need to get out of here, this place is supposed to be a secret. You're going to attract unwanted attention. We have a door to fix too." she glares at Dain.
"Have you ever heard of the lord of good, Mizar?" Atlas asks.
The League groans and the woman says "This is getting weird." to the man. "If Mizar isn't good at disposing of bodies, then we aren't interested." but now doubt has crept into the man and he backs away a bit more. "Can we call this meeting over? It's time for you to move along."
Nowhere interjects "I still don't understand why we have to kill the driver and not this Ott guy."
"I'm not going to explain it again, you're not the brains of this group, are you?" the man says, annoyed.
Immeral says "We should recruit him."
The woman says "He's seen too much, how will we ever trust him?"
Immeral answers "You keep him here until you can trust him."
The woman makes a disgusted face. "Your recruiting techniques are not very smart."
She cuts the bonds on the driver. "You say anything about what you've seen and the black network will burn your house to the ground, you understand?"
"I didn't hear or see anything!" the main cries, and he races past The League, forcing Dain to lift the broken door aside to "open" and "close" it.
Nowhere asks "Why does this guy have a net?" and she removes his gag.
"Thank you, thank you" the man says is a wet mouth sort of voice, I could hardly breath.
Nowhere asks "What is that net?" The woman looks furious.
"It's my fish-gathering net, it lets me grab fish." Ott says
"Why does The Eye want this guy, he's just a fisherman?" asks Nowhere
"It's not for big fish, it's for pet fish. It lets me move fish from jar to jar." Ott states. "Are you guys going to kill me?"
"Why would we kill you?" Nowhere says
"For protecting the fish!" Steeltoes answers. "I'm very important to The Xanathar."
"Why?" says Nowhere incredulously.
"I protect the fish!" he replies. "I keep the fish fed, I make sure they are healthy."
Intrigued, Nowhere asks "What kind of fish?"
"The goldfish!" he exclaims. "I go to the pet market and get a new fish if I need a new one."
Immeral uses the wand of abberation detection, but nobody in the room lights up.
"Are we done with this crap?" the woman says sharply. "We don't know you guys for shit, and if Vivette says to hold him, we hold him." and she puts the gag back in his mouth.
CAPTURE P2 2:40
K'ronk says "We have to catch up with Vivette." and the group leaves hurridly. Dain moving the door back into place off its hinges.
Vivette has a long lead, but between her footprints in the snow, Nowhere's tracking skills, and a bit of help from a find object spell on her cloak, The League catches up in the streets of Waterdeep near the dock ward. The League is within sight of her, as she gets jumped by a team of cloaked drow streaming from an alleyway.
They start running up to the fight and Nowhere says "Who the hell are these drow!? and K'ronk says, "I'm tired of this chase for the stone already. Let's kill these guys and end it!"
Nowhere and Dain yell "Yeah!"
The dozen drow drag Vivette into an alleyway. The two main guys start are pointing strange devices at her with triggers and tubes and one orders her to "hand over the stone." as The League reaches the alley.
The drow turns as The League arrives and one with the black steel device says "This isn't your business, move on."
The other places the device at Vivette's head and says "The stone, now." and she hands over the green loaf-sized rock.
Immeral whispers "That's the Stone of Golorr."
Nowhere says "If we grab the guy with the Stone and cast Leomund's Tiny Hut we can make sure we have it."
The two main drow start walking away towards a dock and the other twelve drow block the street.
Vivette starts backing away from the drow and into the shadows at The League and the drow square off.
K'ronk says "Can we kill them, or will we be criminals?"
Nowhere replies "They just jumped a woman, I think we're good."
Immeral says "We can go around." and they start backing out of the alley.
Nowhere adds "With a little spike growth for separation. Now!"
As the League breaks and runs to the next corner to catch up with the two main drow, Nowhere casts spike growth towards the back end of the alley, scaring and stabbing the drow with a spikey terrain that is magically camoflaged as cobblestones.
They start talking in drow to each other in sharp tones, and move forward away from the spikes as The League charges around the block.
Seraphina casts locate object to keep track of The Stone, knowing it works within a thousand feet. She calls out "Locate object is not working!"
The pair of lead drow start running into an area known as Mistshore.
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/forgottenrealms/images/d/d2/Mistshore.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130704223252
Mistshore is a run-down Dock Ward neighborhood that reeks of fish and scorched timber. A fire swept through the area a little over a year ago, and most of the buildings are now burned-out shells with (at best) sails for roofs. Fishing poles and nets line the dock, and the 15-foot-deep water is covered by a thin layer of crackling ice not yet sturdy enough for anything other than a mouse to step onto.
The drow run down the dock and break into a large ship that has apparently run aground, as ramshackle huts are built up against it. Poor commoners wander the docks even at this late hour.

The lead drow run up a gangplank into the ship, and The League follows. Atlas who has run ahead, stops for a moment to wait for her companions to catch up, and sees they are being pursued by the twelve drow behind, and people start getting out of sight.
They make their way to the deck and see the deck is occupied by various thugs and a bonfire glows in a large stone bowl sitting on the deck of the ship. The twin drow are nowhere to be seen and now the drow squad are at the bottom of the gangplank.
Someone calls out "get the hell of this ship, this is our turf."
"It's my turf now." Nowhere calls back out "Give me the stone or you're going in the water."
The thugs start going into hiding, not knowing what the hell is going on. "I want the Stone!" Nowhere roars.
The thugs start going into hiding, not knowing what the hell is going on. "I want the Stone!" Nowhere roars, but the commoners yell from cover "We don't know about any Stone!"
A sound starts, a loud popping/puffing/crackling sound that comes from the aft of the ship. They run to the back and see down on the deck the two drow, and a ship of some sort is emerging from the water before them. A large cloud of steam emits from below.
Nowhere yells "No!" as a mechanical dragon-turtle appears out of the water and seeing there is no time to board normally, the drow jump on and yell at no one visible saying "take off!"
The squad of other drow show up at the top of the gangplank blocking The League's exit down the ramp. Turning back towards The League, one of the lead drow withdraws the Stone of Golorr from his vest and waves it at The League as they are about fifty feet away from the dock, plowing through the glassy layer of ice across the sea.
Dane screams in rage at the onrushing squad of drow, swinging his axe and holding them at bay.
K'ronk says "Spell time." as he jumps over the side rail, falling twenty feet and racing to the end of the dock.
Seraphina casts guiding bolt and a flash of light streaks towards the escaping drow. Unfortunately the shot goes wide and misses the drow, lighting up the icy sea until it dissipates shortly beyond.
K'ronk casts cone of cold from his staff of frost and the icy cone just reaches the escaping drow and blasts them with freezing magic that envelops them. More sea ice forms around the dragon turtle ship and the drow drops the Stone of Golorr and it bounces off the shell of the dragon turtle ship and it falls into the sea and sinks.
Now the drow on the dragon start yelling at each other in the drow language but the ship they are on does not stop, moving further out to sea, turning towards the ships of Zardoz Zord.
A nimblewright throwing fireballs for the Cassalantars, the Zhentarim grinding dead bodies, mysterious Drow in the harbor, and underneath it all The Xanathar guild with ntellect devourer spies. What will possibly happen next in the mad dash for the Stone of Golorr and the gold dragons of Dagault Neverember?
