It is the year 578 CY, known to many as the common year, since there are many races and cultures across the known Oerth. You and your young group know little of the wide world, except the following. Most of you come from the continent of Oerik, which is vast and known more in rumor than in truth. The eastern part of Oerik is called The Flanaess, for the Flannish people who first colonized it, and were mostly displaced by the Aerians from the west. You currently are in Ratik, an archbarony on the coast of Grendep Bay, with great mountains known as The Rakers to the west. Your friend, old Rin Bakor, the wisest man in your little part of the world showed you and your young friends this map, which he had in his possession for several years. He has sometimes told of his adventures and the creatures he encountered as he sailed the Solnor Ocean as a young man.
On the eastern shores of Grendep Bay is the Timberway forest. It was taken in a war with the Frost Barbarians - the Fruztii, who now stay to the north, and there is an uneasy peace, even trading. Within the Timberway they are a more settled folk, less prone to raiding than their northern kin, yet no less warlike and capable - and infrequently one grows board of the sedate woods life and decides to go raiding.
Ulthek is the capital city, on the coast, and you have heard there are almost four thousand souls who live behind its fortified walls. Your little village, Pine Vale sits deep in the forest four miles south of the Yewway River at the end of a rutty road from the Pine Barrens - a small town a bit larger than your own. Most of your people survive by hunting, farming and logging, but the winters can be deadly cold. Other towns nearby that are on the rivers are logging towns, and for all, the rich forest provides great sustenance, enough to send off to the larger cities for coin and trade, especially the furs. Few travel far from your home.
The Timberway does team with predators, many who have lost their innate fear of men, or have been “altered” to be more aggressive. The foremost of these are the mighty Timberway lions, cougar/mountain lion type animals almost as big as the great lions of the southlands and far more aggressive, faster and more cunning. Besides the natural threats there are supposedly Owlbears deep within the forest, near the uncertain borders between the lands of the noble house of Ulthek and the lands of the Fruztii. Besides the natural threats, and besides the few tribes of goblins, there are said to be some few ogres and even a few of the rare Hov Ninz, the Hobgoblins, in the verges of the forested slopes of the eastern Rakers. There may be other creatures too who wish no disturbance. One persistent rumor claims that a great vampire prince has fled, just in the last few decades, into the deep forest. If true, he is a quiet tenant who must lay somewhere between Keth and Coldspur.
